Faction 8437 ×1

Remilia [1284087]
This is a quick start guide to get new players into Torn since this game is complicated as hell if you haven't played it for 10 f**king years.

Seriously, after typing this out how the hell are players supposed to figure all these mechanics out? George is gonna teach them this? Rofl.

Anyway, this crash course is loosely organized in a top to bottom fashion using the sidebar on the browser version. The goal of this guide is to quickly and in one post touch on every mechanic I could think of in some way and try to tie them together. A lot of this is going to be obvious to a lot of players If I've missed anything important or if anything is confusing, please point it out and I will correct it.

INFORMATION ICONS - Icons that appear at the top of the screen above player name.

Donator Status:
This status is gained by purchasing a Donator Pack (Abbreviated DP) These can be purchased off the Item Market for around 27million in game money or purchased for 5 USD. Donator status has huge benefits and lasts 31 days. Main benefits include increased rate of energy restored to 5 in 10 minutes and raises energy bar to 150 max, and player advanced search that can be used to find people to attack. You can also subscribe for a monthly price which is the same as donator status. Subscribers get random items each month including a chance at powerful books that can be read for huge month long bonuses. However, these books can also be gained as mission rewards.

Faction: A faction is a group of players that play together. Factions have armories, perks, chat, and forum. The faction I am in specializes in helping new players learn to play, and we are part of a coalition of over 200 players spread among 5 factions all with different perks, play styles, and skill levels. Why not apply to join us? Join the White Rabbits

Booster Cooldown: 24 Hours maximum unless you have faction perks. This status begins when you use a booster item and includes Alcohol, Candy, and Energy Drinks. Each booster has an amount that it adds between 30 minutes and 6 hours of time to the cooldown. When you reach above your maximum cooldown you can no longer use booster items until the cooldown goes under your maximum.

Medical Cooldown:
Works similar to booster cooldown but is affected by hospital time and medical items. If you max your medical cooldown, you can still be revived by another (Revives unlocked by obtaining brain surgeon rank in medical field) player at the cost of their energy. This is usually sold as a service in trade chat.

Drug Effects:
Drug effects and cooldowns work differently to boosters and medical items. You can only be effected by one drug at a time and must wait for the effect to expire before you can take another one. Drugs provide a number of different benefits with some downsides, Xanax and LSD provide Energy while Ecstasy doubles happy. These are good for gym training. There is a chance that you can overdose on a drug which can increase the negative effects.

Drug Addiction Icon:
Drug addiction status is a created by taking a lot of drugs in a short amount of time. This is normally not something a new player has to deal with but if you do see this status it means you need to fly to switzerland (Unlocked at level 15) and rehab. Rehab costs 250,000 dollars each and the amount of rehabs you need scales incrementally with drug use. Drug temporarily lowers gym stats and work stats. High addiction levels can also get you kicked from your education course or hurt in the gym when NOT under drug effects (To counter this, take drugs then immediately click gym)

Marriage: Marry the probably a dude of your dreams. Only benefit is shared property and every 50 days you get a marriage merit.

INFORMATION - Includes player name and a bunch of colorful bars.

Money: Used for buying items, weapons, armor, temporary items, consumables, points, stocks, and property. You can make money in a bunch of different ways. The easiest way to make money is probably to whip out your credit card, spend 100 bucks on 20 donator packs, sell them on the item market and BOOM you have half a billion dollars to play with. Other than that half serious suggestion, you can make money, but unfortunately there really isn't a lot of options open to you early. Gaining money is a grind, and I suggest snuggling up to people who have it. Not in a "Can I have your stuff" way, but in more of a "Hey, what's up? How can I help!" kinda way.

Beer Money: You can make money by selling beer that you buy from Bits 'n' bobs. You buy the beer for like 5 dollars each, and it's item market value as a booster item is nearly 1,000 dollars. The problem with this is that you can only buy 100 items per day from the item market and I find that it is often sold out. You can buy 100 of anything cheap really from a shop and flip it like bricks or such. Garbage is worth a lot in Torn City.

Slut Money: Slutting in torn city is intentionally attacking and losing to a higher level player. (Commonly Abbreviated slutting or "losses") The buyer gains a defend won which is worth experience and merits. You gain whatever amount of money you can negotiate, usually 100k to 350k per loss. This is a terrible deal for you since you spend 25 energy and get zero level exp, gym stats, or anything but it's money. I had to put it here.

Flying Money: Flying is great money. You can make millions of dollars per day once flying is unlocked at level 15. Flying is super easy too. 1) Get like 50,000 dollars to buy flowers with. 2) Check this site Torn City Travel Run - Flowers to see which countries have flowers. 3) Fly there and wait the travel time. 4) Buy flowers and fly back. BOOM you just made up to 2million dollars.

Level: Your current level. Every 5 levels you get a merit. Each level you gain max life, and unlock new areas. At level 15 most of the important features are unlocked. Level EXP can be viewed in China by the fortune teller but is otherwise invisible. You gain exp from fighting, training in gym, doing crimes, and possible smaller amounts from other means. The fastest way to gain leveling exp is to attack and leave people your level or higher. A higher level also makes you harder to be busted from jail, so be warned.

Points: Alternative Currency. Can be purchased and sold for Money in point market. Great way to store money as they hold their value. These are used for things in the point market but are primarily used for daily energy refills that can be used once per day. Points are primarily created by exchanging sets of flowers bought by flying to other countries (Flying is unlocked at level 15) to the museum (Unlocked by bachelor of History education)

Merits: Can be assigned to powerful benefits that incrementally cost more. These are awarded for random things (Honors) and as sets of incremental rewards (Medals). Choices made can be reset for a large amount of points at incremental increasing cost. What is best depends on play-style. In the long term the best is Education Length since you complete courses faster. For combat Crit Hit Rate and Life Points since there are few to no other way to increase these besides merits. No other merits count for much for a new player. Nerve Bar and Crime Success look nice but in practice provide marginal benefit.

Energy: Abbreviated E. Used for attacking players (25E), Reviving (75E or less w/ faction perks), and training in the gym. Can be increased by daily point refills, seasonal newsletter codes (once every 3 months), daily point refills, and drugs. Energy can be increased above the maximum 100 / 150 limit using drugs or boosters up to a maximum of 1,000. Any energy gained above 1,000 will be lost.

Nerve: Abbreviated NB. Used for crimes and refreshes at a rate of 1 / 10 minutes, 1 / 5 minutes for Donators. As you commit more crimes your maximum NB will increase in multiples of 5 up to a maximum of 60 but this takes a long time and there is no way to view exact progress. You can also increase your maximum nerve via faction perks and merits. Nerve can be boosted using beer or alcohol.

Happy: Increases your gym gains. Maximum happy is increased by obtaining better property and hiring staff. Fills VERY slowly. This can be depleted by drug overdose. Can be increased by boosters such as candy, Erotic DVD's (Abbreviated EDVD) and doubled by Ecstacy. Happy can be boosted over the maximum temporarily, but every 15 minutes it will be reset to your maximum.

Life: Used for fighting. Regenerates slowly. Can be healed with medical items. Maximum can be raised with merits.

Chain:
See your faction leader for details. How a faction earns respect.

AREAS - Cool places in the city that do cool things.

Items:
This is where you use and equip items. This is also where you purchase ammo in the ammo locker. The best weapons are subjective but read the stats. Melee weapons don't need ammo but can't have attachments (Earned from Missions) Every weapon has a stealth modifier. Stealth is affected by weapon used, if your face is covered by clothing or armor, weapon attachments, and how long the fight lasts. Stealth determines if an attacker is discovered after an attack. These stealthed hits are listed as "Anonymous."

City: Contains all the important places in the city. They are all useful, I suggest looking around but the below 4 are important.
Travel Agent - Used for Flying.
Bits 'n' Bobs - Can be a good source of beer if in stock.
Item Market - Buy shit you don't need and can't afford.
Estate Agent - Buy or rent better housing

Job: Your current job. If you don't have one, go to the newspaper.

City Jobs: At the top are city jobs. Grocer, Casino, and Army are the three starter jobs with Education, Law, and Medical being the "Advanced city jobs" and require higher stats. Each day you gain a number of work stats and job points. Job points can be spent on promotions. You cannot be fired from city jobs. Use these city jobs to grow your work stats until you can join a player owned company. The advanced city jobs have PERMANENT bonus perks once you make the last rank in the job so they are worth going back to eventually.

Companies:
These are player owned and provide a wide range of benefits and perks, from extra battle stats, extra money, free energy boosts, free items, to random other shit and perks. The benefit is unique to each company. The issue with companies is that drug effects and daily activity play a role in productivity so if you are a druggy and don't rehab or are not active, a director will remove you.

Company Training: Companies are able to train all their employees a set number of times per day depending on the company. This provides a permanent boost to work stats. If you are looking to join a player owned company, negotiating the allocation of these trains to yourself may be to your benefit and your director.

Job Points: These are gained at both City Jobs and Companies and are NEVER lost unless spent. They are gained at the same time as you are paid and can be spent on the company bonuses. The amount you gain depends on the stars of the company or your position in the city job.

Gym: Train your gym / battle stats using energy. You can also purchase better gym memberships. Balanced stats are usually thought to be the best. The best ways to train is to... over days... stack your energy up to 1,000 using xanax, letting your drug cooldown expire and then boosting your happy to huge amounts with E DVD's before using an ecstacy to double your happy further before training all your energy at once. Since your a broke noob, just try to use as much candy as possible before you train and supplement that with as much Ecstacy or LSD as you can afford.

Properties: Your best bet is to find someone willing to marry your noob ass so you can rent a good property together from the rental market and split the cost.

Education: Long term perks. The best in my opinion is Biology since it provides you an extra source of income filling blood bags.

Crimes:
Crimes primarily give you crime experience. Crime experience is gained with each successful crime but a percentage of your crime experience will be lost with each Red Jail result. Crime exp cannot be seen. A solid foundation is to do 100 of any of the 2 nerve crimes, then 100 of any of the 3 nerve crimes and then doing the Shoplift: Clothing store 10,000 times until you f**king hate jackets.

Missions:
Do random things for rewards. The best rewards are books or weapon mods. Weapon mods come in "upgraded" variants in 4 different levels. The higher leveled attachments only show if you have the previous level, so if you see one you like buy it so you get a chance to see the higher leveled one sooner since the rewards cycle so slowly.

Newspaper:
An outdated medium nobody reads that should be as dead as dogs and the radio.

Jail: Bust people for 5 nerve. These are horrifically outdated, and people have scripts that do them instantly so it's not worth chasing these merits or rewards. If you do a crime that you shouldn't have done and get stuck in the jail for like 6 hours, have a friend send you a lawyer business card. It's usually cheaper than them bailing you out.

EXTRA INFORMATION - Other important stuff to know.

Stocks:
Can be purchased when you purchase a stock ticker from the point shop.

Stock Benefit:
Each stock has a benefit when you hold a certain amount of stocks. These are commonly traded as "Stock Benefit Blocks." These blocks are typically hundreds of millions but provided monthly perks or items.

ATTACKING - To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!

Experience:
After defeating an enemy, you get 3 options. Leaving an enemy gives you full leveling experience. Mugging them gives you a % of their on hand cash and half leveling experience. Hospitalizing them will put them in the hospital for a few hours but give you the least amount of leveling experience.

Temporary items: These are used to debuff enemies in fights. The most common one for defending is Smoke Grenades as they last the longest at 2 to 3 minutes and reduce enemy speed (Ability to hit you) by 66%. Flash grenades are more effective at 80% reduction but only last 20 seconds. Tear gas and pepper spray do the same thing but affect the enemies dexterity.

PREFERENCES - Yes, there is important stuff in the settings menu too.

General Settings:
This allows you to set who can revive you. This is very important to know how to do because you don't always want your enemies to be able to revive you and attack you repeatedly.

Attack Settings: This allows you to reequip temporary weapons after each fight and manage which weapon you use in defends. If using temporary weapons like smokes, set this number to 100, and the other weapon you will use to 1.

Management: When looking for factions, marriages, or jobs if you ever need to cancel an application come here to do so. For some reason the admins have kept this pretty hard to freaking figure out how to do since the ancient days.

I don't think we have any guides that break down the mechanics this deep. Do we have a single guide that tells where points come from? What they do and are used for? How energy works and how it can be regenerated? How drugs and addiction works? The booster cooldown? Baldr's comes close but to a new player it can be a monster to read through if looking for a specific thing. I tried to make my guide digestible bullet points.

There are a lot of guides that assume this knowledge, or are more specialized on specific topics but for a new player it's not easy to figure out all of how this works and how it relates to each other.

Very helpful guide with items that were unclear to me before. Esp booster cooldowns and how to wait after taking the drugs and equipping temp items. Thanks

Pretty good guide, learned a thing or two, I won’t lie though, some of the stuff in here conflicts with other guides that I’ve read, but for the rest pretty good
