Chedburn [1] Admin Developer
Citizens,

Over the past year we've been able to prioritize a significant development effort towards Crimes 2.0, with the intention of getting it released to the playerbase as soon as feasibly possible. We put a plan together and set ourselves a deadline. Today marks the first deadline.

We've intentionally tried to keep the hype-train on its rails by keeping quiet about its progress. This is by far the biggest feature update made to Torn in its history, and we're very proud of it, but it's not a magical unicorn - expectations must be realistic.

Early access begins today, with just the first single crime made available for now. New crimes will be released approximately every 2-3 weeks. Although ten crimes have already been completed, this methodical staged release schedule allows the team to refocus on each individual crime before its release to perfect it while also giving us time to tune and optimize each recently released crime.

Our timeline allows for the first ten crimes to be released by the end of this year, along with a brand new Organized Crimes system. Please be patient with us; we're not going to rush things, and we want to get this right. We are a hundred percent committed to the long-term success of Crimes 2.0, and we'll make sure it's the best it can possibly be over the coming months.

Some of these early crimes won't yield high rewards on a frequent basis, and they may even be underwhelming. The mechanics of each crime will become noticeably more advanced with each release, and the rewards will also increase. Please note that each crime is made to appeal to different playstyles - if a certain crime isn't for you, others will be.

For those of you who wish to take part in the early access release, you'll now see a little link in the top right corner of the Crimes page.

Here's some important notes to hopefully address any initial questions...

- Crimes 2.0 has not been in continuous development for 10 years, far from it. Rather, it's been on and off with limited bursts of momentum due to its oppressive scale, rebuilds and redesigns, issues with developers, and critical priorities constantly taking precedence and breaking any momentum. It's only in the last year we've been able to finally achieve an environment that has maintained a consistent force propelling us towards some release dates.

- There will be balancing issues, changes will be made, and rewards will be tuned as we assess the analytics. We reserve the right to change anything as we see fit at any time. There will be issues, but any problems we encounter are trivial to resolve over time.

- Everyone will be able to complete a migration process to Crimes 2.0 voluntarily. Once a player has migrated, they cannot return back to the old system. This is an optional process and will remain so for a long time.

- Your progress will transfer over to Crimes 2.0, but it may not look the same as before. Your previously earned crime experience under the old system will continue to boost your maximum nerve and allow you to start more difficult crimes in the new system, however, each crime now also has its own skill level starting from level 1, which further improves the success rates and rewards.

- Most players will see their natural nerve bars increase upon migration of crime experience to the new system. In Crimes 2.0, there is no limit to maximum nerve, although each increment will be harder to achieve.

- Crimes 2.0 isn't intended to simply produce more rewards than before, at least not initially within the early crimes that are being released first. Having said that, some crimes, especially early on, may be lucrative as the markets stabilize.

- The existing criminal record figures will be merged into a new criminal record. All of the old crime medals will be stripped from players upon migration, but many of the 120 new medals will be instantly received upon completing the migration process. Crimes spanning Theft, Fraud, Counterfeiting, Computer crime, Illicit services, and Vandalism will be made available during the initial release this year. Crimes within the Extortion and Illegal production categories will not be available for some time, but will follow in the future. How many old medals you'll lose and gain will be explained during the migration process before you accept.

- Criminal records are now visible and finally graphed over time in the Personal Stats section for those who have migrated. A proper Criminal Record page will be available soon.

- Likewise, several honor bars from the old crimes system will be removed. However, each individual crime in Crimes 2.0 will feature two brand-new honors.

- Each crime will be released approximately every two to three weeks. We want to take as much time as possible to ensure each crime is given the maximum attention and its many parameters are carefully tuned in the weeks after release.

- We will be returning to released crimes in the future to add additional mechanics and depth where needed, especially for any that feel a little lackluster in comparison with others.

- The new system will have its own economy, and many crimes will depend on items gained from other crimes. This process could take a long time to produce sufficient quantities, another advantage of separating each crime's release.

Here's some tips to get you started...

- Like before, your hidden Crime Experience determines your success chances in each crime, but only up to a point. Crime Skill then further increases your success chance, as you specialize into that crime. As your skill level increases through each crime, new outcomes become available, and additional content is unlocked.

- Some crimes have Unique Outcomes that can only ever be received once. Little stars will appear at the bottom of the attempt buttons to indicate any Unique Outcomes that are currently available to you. These outcomes may provide more lucrative rewards, or they may provide special items. Unique Outcomes provide bonus skill and experience.

- The size of your natural nerve bar is still based on your Crime Experience, however, the cap is now effectively unlimited. Upon migration, most citizens will see an increase to their nerve bars. After migration, nerve bars will decrease immediately upon losing their required crime experience. The increases, however, will be unpredictable. Maximum nerve bars still increase or decrease in increments of 5.

- A failure means you don't gain anything, but you also won’t lose anything. Critical failures are a different matter, however, as they can result in Jail time, Hospital time, Life loss, Loss of Money, or Loss of Items. Critical failures will always reduce your crime skill and experience.

- After receiving a critical failure, you'll become demoralized when performing any crime in the future. This reduces the amount of crime skill and experience you'll gain for a while, but it does gradually wear off over time.

- By succeeding multiple times in a row, you'll slowly accumulate a hidden 'Crime Chain' bonus to crime skill and crime experience gains which transcends across all crimes. Failures will halve this bonus, while Critical Failures will zero it.

- Each crime has two possible honor bars. One is given upon reaching a skill level of 100, and the other is given upon achieving a special goal within that crime.

- As you progress, we record a vast array of statistics relating to each crime. You can see these by clicking or tapping a crime's banner at the top.

- Crime Enhancers not only increase crime skill and experience gains by 5%, they also unlock additional outcomes which may sometimes be more rewarding. Each crime requires a different enhancer. Crime Enhancers can be found throughout the crimes system within Unique Outcomes.

- All bonuses from companies, educations, merits, and factions that previously passively increased crime success chance now actively increase crime experience and crime skill gains.

- After migration to Crimes 2.0, your old crime experience will still be increased by the new crimes, and used within the organized crimes system, until that is also replaced.

Thanks.
