Methodology
How TornLife turns public Torn data into ranks, records and history, and the limits it works within.
How fresh the data is
A profile on TornLife can be up to about five weeks behind Torn. Player data comes from an existing collector that visits every account on one cycle of roughly 34 days, so each player row is between 0 and 35 days old (about 17 days on average). Nothing on TornLife can make it fresher, and TornLife will not add new calls to Torn's API to try. That is why every profile, list and number shows the date it was observed, and why numbers older than 30 days are shaded and read "about N weeks old".
Because of this, TornLife leads with what Torn itself does not show: ranks, percentiles, change since January and context.
History
TornLife's own observations start in 2026. For most players it has two points in time: a snapshot from January 2026 and the latest observation. "Since January" compares those two, and each change has its own window. TornLife never draws a line through two points as if it knew what happened in between. Timelines appear only once three or more observations exist.
Rankings, ties and percentiles
- Rankings are rebuilt from the latest observation of every player, normally once a day (not on Sundays). Each board states when its ranking was built.
- Players with the same value share a rank, and TornLife says so: "#1 (tied with 1,998 others)". When a tie covers more than 1% of ranked players, the plate shows "top X%" and "shared value" instead of a misleading "#1".
- Percentiles are computed among players with a non-zero value, so "top 0.03%" means among players who have done the thing at all.
- Federal accounts stay in the highscores with a marker; NPCs are excluded. Values that are obviously broken data are excluded from ranking with a note on the board.
- Stats that are almost always zero, capped, or unreliable in the source data are not published or not ranked; each board says why.
Records
A record is the highest value TornLife has observed for a statistic, with the holder, the runner-up and the build it came from. TornLife never calls one a "world record": players it has not observed could hold more.
Fedded players
Federal jail status is taken from Torn's public profile status. The only reason TornLife ever gives is Torn's own public status text. Account closures ("marked for deletion") are counted apart and never presented as punishment. Dates are windows between two observations unless a dated source supports a day.
Forums
The forum archive covers the public Torn forums from 23 June 2014. Likes and view counts are frozen at the time each thread was fetched, so old threads show lifetime totals and young threads look small; scores that rank threads take the thread's age at fetch into account. Posts are shown as written. Only real-world personal information is masked.
Generated text
Numbers, titles and descriptions are computed deterministically from data, without a language model. Where TornLife publishes text written with a model, it is labelled with its sources, the date it was verified and the model used.
What search engines see
Not every page is offered to search engines. A player page is indexed when it holds something genuinely distinctive (a top rank, a staff role, a record); thin pages stay reachable for people but are marked noindex. Highscore pages 1 to 10 are indexed; deeper pages are not.
