How does education work in Torn, and which courses should be taken first?

Education is a set of timed courses that cost money, sometimes need a prerequisite, and give working stats and perks. No current source names a first course, so no consensus was found. The only first-course advice is a 2019 guide recommending Introduction to Self Defence[1]. General Studies carries a 10% working stat bonus for later courses[2].

How education works

  • Education is reached from the sidebar or the West Side of the City. Enrolling costs money that varies by course, and some courses need a prerequisite course first[3].
  • To enrol: open Education, pick one of 12 areas, choose a class, click Join this course, and confirm on the page showing duration and cost[4].
  • Owning the IST Benefit Block waives education fees[3].
  • Drug use can kick a player out of a course, and the course then restarts from the beginning[3]. The wiki puts the kick at around an addiction level giving a 6-7% battle stats debuff with maximum Toleration in a faction, and occasionally as low as 5%. A 10* Nightclub mitigates it[5].
  • Leaving a course was changed on 2022-10-04 to match leaving factions, companies and jobs[6]. Since 2020-12-15 an event is sent when a course completes[7].

Rewards by course category

Passive battle stat bonuses from education total Strength +5%, Speed +14%, Defense +11% and Dexterity +19% on the 2023 battle stats page[8]. The wiki's 2025 perk list gives +5%, +13%, +19% and +11% for the common perks[9]. The two lists differ on Speed and on which stat carries which figure, and the sources do not say which is current.

  • General Studies: 10% working stat increase for all future educations completed, plus driving crimes access (Crimes 1.0), temporary weapon bonuses and a 15% hunting bonus[2].
  • Biology: 1% damage to all weapons, +10% neck hit damage, +3% critical hit chance, +20% medical item effectiveness, blood withdrawal and delivery, and steroids in the temporary slot[9].
  • Business Management and Maths: company perks, including +10% company productivity and +12% employee effectiveness from Business Management, and +1% company productivity from Maths that stacks with it[9][2].
  • Computer Science: coding viruses, the Cracking crime, anonymous mail and cash, and Bootlegging and Scamming websites[9].
  • Law: jail escape and bust bonuses, including +65% Busting skill and -57.25% bail cost[2].
  • Sports Science: +1% gym gains per stat and needle effectiveness +10%[2].
  • Psychology: +10% awareness and +10% passive crime XP[2].
  • Self Defense: kick attack and +100% fist damage[2].

Which to take first

No current source gives a first-course order, so no consensus was found. The wiki's Down To Details page only points players to the Education page for which education suits them[10].

  • General Studies has the one perk that speeds later education outputs: a 10% working stat increase for future educations[2]. That makes it a reasonable early pick by TornLife's reading of the perk list, not a sourced recommendation.
  • Pick by goal: Computer Science for the Cracking crime and Scamming[9], Business Management for company work[9], Biology or Self Defense for combat perks[9][2], and Law for busting[2].
  • Historical opinion: a 2019 guide recommended Introduction to Self Defence first for brand new players, since it gives 50 of each work stat, enough for promotion in starter jobs[1].

Shortening it

The Education merit gives a -2% education time per level, max 20%[11]. With the WSU stock block and the Principal perk the total is 35%, not 40%[11]. Reductions apply only to courses started afterward[11]. Staff say the reduction is already shown in the course time on the Education page[12]. Merit advice: a 2020 guide called maxing Education universally good[13]. A 2026 beginner guide puts Education Length first, then Crime Progression or Bank Interest, then Critical Hit Rate, then Life Points, and calls the order a long debate[14].

Older figures (2019)

Wise Wolf's 2019 guide describes 12 bachelor courses of 125 units, about six years four months unreduced, with units of 7 days to 7 weeks costing $200 to $5000 each. Structure is introduction, intermediate units, then bachelor[1]. It puts total work stat gains at manual 3015, intelligence 8193 and endurance 3535, minor next to company training[1]. These figures are old and may have changed. The Education city job has specials of +100 Manual, Intelligence or Endurance per 10 Job Points[15].

TornLife lacks a current course-by-course list of durations, costs and prerequisites.

Where sources disagree

  • The 2023 battle stats page lists education Speed +14%, Defense +11%, Dexterity +19%[8]; the 2025 perks page lists Speed +13% with the same Dexterity and Defense figures[9].
