Distraction
What TornLife's research has established about Distraction, and the questions players asked about it.
What TornLife has verified
- Distraction is the group-attack mechanic in Torn combat. It governs what happens to a defender attacked by multiple players, applying debuffs under a 'Distracted' status effect that weaken the defender's effective battle stats. It is not a Crimes 2.0 mechanic. (documented; Distraction, )
- The Distracted effect is applied to the defender but the level is personalised to each attacker. If one player has made an aggressive action within the last 30 seconds, every other attacker sees level one. Two players give level two to everyone else, and so on. (documented; Distraction, )
- Distraction can carry over from a previous fight. An attack received within 30 seconds of another player's aggressive action is treated as a group attack, so the defender may miss a hit. (documented; Distraction, )
- When a player makes an aggressive action, their own perceived Distraction level resets to zero. Aggressive actions include everything except reloading a weapon and injecting temporary booster needles such as melatonin. (documented; Distraction, )
- Aggression debuff: the defender's chance to take a turn against each attacker's turn is 1/(D+1), where D is the Distraction level and D+1 equals N, the number of players who acted aggressively in the last 30 seconds. With two attackers the chance is 50%. (documented; Distraction — Aggression Debuff, )
- Suppression debuff: Defense and Dexterity are reduced to 1/2^D. Level 1 removes 50%, level 2 75%, level 3 87.5%, level 5 96.88%, level 10 99.90%. For example, 10,000,000 becomes 5,000,000 at level 1 and 9,766 at level 10. (documented; Distraction — Suppression Debuff, )
- Distraction was released in Patch list #140 on 05/05/20. It merged two older group-attack debuffs into one 'Distracted' effect that resets on your own hit. Group attack simultaneous attacker limit rose from 70 to 100 on 18/05/21 (#192). (confirmed by Torn; Distraction — Patch History, )
- Patch list #361 on 12/11/2024 capped distraction at 25 stacks for everyone, NPCs and players. The page also notes a Halloweek '24 assessment to raise the group attacking limit as far as possible (already raised from 125 to 250). (confirmed by Torn; Distraction — Patch History, )
- Distraction level is capped at 25, even if 26 or more players have acted in the last 30 seconds. (documented; Distraction, )
