Crime Confusion

So when You got cught and goto jail probably only me that finds this confusing but this is the script.

Does that mean I got away from the police?

Just confuses me.

1.You leave home and make your way to the finest Showroom in Torn City.
2.Its open so you walk inside and begin browsing through the cars.
3.You walk over to the Firebird and pull out the coat hanger.
4.You slide the modified coat hanger down between the weather stripping and window of the car.
5.You catch the hook onto the lock and pull it up, unlocking the door.
6.You open the door and dive under the dash-board.
7.You manage to hotwire the car, the engine starts.
8.As you drive through the glass window of the showroom, a patrol car spots you and flicks on its sirens.

That means the police chased you for 5 minutes until you stopped and gave up.

Well to be fair, technically even upon successful escape from the police you would eventually have to pull over.
