How do u go up in classes I have a mustang but can race with it.

How do u go up in classes I have a mustang but can race with it.
Race in official races and win 1-3 places in order to get points. Once you collect required number of points you get promoted to better class. Check wikifor number of points needed.
Does this mean we shouldn't spend points on upgrades because it's better to save them?
