Could you provide any more details, such as the browser, os and device? I have heard of a similar problem to this.

when the counter went back up, were all the racing slots filled?

There are actually 3 different timers. First one is an actual wait time, that you can set up. Second one is a "cooldown" - we wait for cron to run (can be a minute or something), we can't actually say, how much this will take. And the third one is a timer, that will starts after cron - can be also a minute. Perhaps you saw this 3 stages in the "longest" case?

It always stood "starting race" when counting down.

Actually, both final timers titles will be "starting race...". I really think, that this problem was related to what I described. Please contact me directly, if you will notice something like this again.
