I've been a general in the army for ages, so i don't know how this works.
but if i leave the army to join another job, when i return to the army, will i still be a general? and will i still have my job points?

Yes you retain your rank and job points even if you go to another starter job (or a company job) and come back to the Army later.
However if you have a large number of job points saved up then you might want to consider spending them on a defence boost as the gains can be significant (ie. in the millions) if you have enough points stacked up.
