All manner of diseases are on the rise...
The DSM I, printed in 1952 was only 145 pages long. The newest edition, printed in 2013, is almost 970 pages long.
In 1950 there were only a few hundred diseases, but now there are closer to 100,000.
Why is this? I know the answer, but I'm curious to see if ANYONE else does. I doubt it, so prove me wrong

My first guess would be all the chemicals we are pumping into water and the air. That can't help. Shipping things like Anthrax all over the world probably isn't helping. Massive wars where they don't bury the dead. Stuff like that . But mostly the chemicals we disregard.
Genetic mutations, Diseases have varied because they would've had to, Survival of the fittest so to speak, So because of the time span, It would be natural to have more diseases due to the rate of genetic mutations causing genetic diversities and therefore more diseases.
Massive increase in electronic radiation exposure? GMO? More tourism? Vaccinations? Sexual pevertions? Drug medications? Depopulation agenda? Unhealthy inactive lifestyles? Etc, etc, etc....
Wouldn't that make us more likely to be infected by disease rather than create new diseases.
Viruses and Bacteria are constantly evolving to battle antibiotics and cures, just like everything. It's called evolution
I'm not saying this is the only contributing factor, some have been mentioned above my post
simply because we can live enough to detect more, of course some of those diseases never existed before like HIV (not talking about 1950 exactly) but those are rare and come from experimental failure
But the real reason is that we can detect more of them. and every year we will find more and more. science dose no create a new diseases most of the time but they just find new ones as the human age grow there will be new problems to survive, it's not like that in stone age there was not any cancer.
We can see more of them, as Omega notes. There aren't necessarily more... we just see more.
I'd say its a mixture of pathogen evolution + more available methods for diagnostic + increased human exposure to new kinds of disease (GMO, tourism, imunesupression)
As a veterinarian scientist, it happens as well as dogs. Most pet owners tell me 30 to 50 years ago pets were "more healthy" or "less prone to disease". So i believe is more manipulation of the external factors (food, environment), disease evoltion (pathogen evolution) and more advanced diagnostic methods (from a simple blood slide used in the past, to PCR / qRT-PCR, transcriptomics nowadays)
A large part of our increase in diseases in humans is because from the mid 50's to early 60's they mass vaccinated with contaminated vaccines....the Monkey renal cell cultures they had contained wild field viruses that the monkeys carried. Admitted to by Dr. Maurice Hellerman Head of Merck laboratories vaccine division after he retired...plus our Govrenment covered it up, made the information top secret and classified it vital to national security.
President Nixon knowing about the cover up and the potential known cancer Polyomavirus contaminated vaccine, renamed SV40, had just been given to 200 million people in the states. So to head off this coming cancer epidemic Nixon came on TV and declared war on cancer with the hope of being able to develope a vaccine against cancer to save us from our vaccine...I know, this is so bizarre and unreal.....I think one of the major researchers in charge of the NIH said the public would be better off not knowing this for their own good......similar things have happened in Veterinary fields as well....BLV or bovine leukemia virus.....these little bastards are so small they can't kill or inactivate them all.

The allergies and autoimmune diseases, at least some, can be directly linked to these vaccines...peanut and, egg allergies especially since they grow their vaccine in media that contains eggs, and peanut oil is used in some vaccines.
Not sure if that was the answer you were looking for, but I do know one thing......vacinations have brought better health and prevented a lot of disease...but with a cost many years down the road to those early individuals vaccinated and their offspring. Plus SV 40 has been shown to be found in 43% of the seminal fluid tested....which can be passed on to those intimately in contact with a positive person. The gift that just keeps on giving.

This is a faulty premise. Just because the DSM describes more diseases doesn't mean there actually are. Although because of evolution and other factors, in reality there probably are.

What does that have to do with your claims of diseases being on the rise? Or are you referring to how we label mental disorders these days?
Page count doesn't necessarily mean more diagnostic classifications, the more research can be done, the more we know about things and so we can add information on things like symptoms and treatments, which will also increase page count.
I think we have a tendency to sub group more too, since we're much more able to research these diseases in detail. And when you say diseases are on the rise...do you differentiate between the different strains, ie there are like 5 different types of the ebola virus we can identify.
Really though, what stats and proof do you have that diseases are on the rise at all? There's no scientific basis to your claim, not saying you're wrong or anything, just curious about your source as not sure if true or not.

We have more contact with inhospitable parts and remote parts of the world which harbour many diseases which we then contract and spread around when we return to our homes.
Eg there are plenty of nasties lurking in rainforests and jungles and more people go there than they did 50 years ago so they brought the illness back with them and introduced them into the population.
More people watch big brother nowadays. Thats the cause of it all. Pure brain killer.
I think We actually started seeing this back in probably the 1970’s or 1980’s or before then actually.
Everything used to have C.F.C’s or Cloro Flor Carbin’s in them. Until We finally Realized that they where Posing or producting Holes in Our Atmosphere for example.
Then We stop using them. But it was really actually a little to Late by then.
We have just about lost our Atmosphere or Magnetic Shield and wherever that happens the Earth will Fry like an Egg.
The Atmosphere or Magnetic Shield is the only thing that is Protecting Us right now.
Then We also really used to Pollute our Waters or Riverways quite a Few Years ago too.
We did not really Understand or Care about what We where doing until Now.
