Im looking for a very challenging RPG game where different characters maintain different roles, with their own skill sets etc. I also prefer it to be an old style world, swords knights etc etc. Something thats slow moving and has environmental depth would be great. As a point of reference Ill say I really enjoyed Vagrant story.
So if you guys could recommend something Id be most greatfull.

Definitely Dragon Age Origins, Dragon age awakening (dlc for origin), Dragon Age 2 (quite crap but ok if you just want to play for the story) and Dragon age inquisition. It meets all the criteria you set, you can have a group of 4 characters, each have their own skill, old style world with mages, warriors, rogues. All these games are sort of slow, theres a lot of tactics involved in the first 2 games and you can pause the battle whenever you want to assign tasks to different characters, the best thing about Dragon age though is the decision making, every decision you make feels as though it has a consequence, there are multiple endings which depend on the decisions you made throughout the game, the introduction to the game also changes depending on what race you choose to be.

Skyrim and Witcher are very good aswell and in many aspects better but theres just something with Dragon age which gets you addicted, I think its the character building, the humurous conversations some characters have and personally I love the battle system (which I felt was greatly improved from origins to the second and third game

Check em out, might be the best RPG game you've ever played.

Dark Souls is hard but fair. Dark Souls 2 is actually more accessible but isn't as good. None the less, DS2 is actually easier so its a good place to start.

Also Dragon Age is "challenging"??? Have you been hitting the crack pipe? I never had to reload a single save in DA1 or 2!!

I would go with elder scrolls but I pick oblivion over skyrim. It can be extremely difficult if you level incorrectly, has a better feel then skyrim imo, although skyrims combat was better and there's dragons

Hate to be the devils advocate here buuuuut.....
Final fantasy 9 might fit the bill.

It is not the most popular title by far but it ticks a lot of your boxes.
Each character has a specific niche, and are a lot less blank slate then most final fantasys.
For example, one is a dedicated Tank, another a buffer/debufer another a healer ect....

There is a tiny element of tactics in regards to who you use and where: your battle party is divided into front and back rows, in the back row they deal less physical damage, but deal normal skill/magic damage and receive less physical damage. The font row is the opposite.

The world is to me a mix between medieval and generic fantasy, you have kings, queens knights and castles...mixed with airships, magic and alternate worlds.

As for difficulty? some fights are truly challenging, you COULD run through the whole game without any grinding or side-questing but it would be tough. So grinding and loot hunting is while not necessary - incredibly helpful.
So not a hard game, but hard by final fantasy standerds.

Story?....its a final fantasy game.... expect melodrama, cheesy storylines and a rushed ending....
but sometimes that's what you need.

How to get it....ummm, its a PS1 game so..... 2nd hand store? garage sale?
you COULD get a PS1 emulator for your PC *cough* PSEXE *cough* and pick up the ISO's from wherever you can find them.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it is hard to get into

If you want something more modern..... you cant look past dragon age origins - recommend that to anyone keen on RPG's 100%

I'm gonna be old school and suggest good old DnD 3e. Video games by their very nature are limited in the experience they can deliver to you because of technological or artificial constraints.

With a tabletop game, you're only constrained by your imagination. Want to play a transvestite bard with mommy issues? Go ahead. An angry racist dwarf? Whatever. A total Mary Sue persons who always happens to do what you yourself think you would do in that situation? Not very imaginative but you're quite welcome.

No videogame can match a tabletop game for complexity, variety and depth.

hey stonemason, while id never rule tabletop games out, id need friends/hostages to play them :D

mentaler, this is gunna like, totaly blow ur mind, but i OWN a ps1 :O!!, its like, totally old n stuff :D , as for the ff9 game, the story line is terrible and the characters loathesome but its a decent game, or was. u gotta love the chocobo hot or cold and the treasure hunting thing in the wider world, justdont get me started on the card game..

and as for u mr hanoth, id ordered a copy of dark souls 3 after reading some rave reviews, so thanks for the heads up man

Woah, you have a PS1 that still works! both of mine bricked a few years ago.
As for FF9 I thought the story was ok, but in the second half i sort of felt like the writers had no idea what to do or where to go, the final chapter left me scratching my head thinking.....relay? is that the best you have got?!?!
But overall i did enjoy it, free roaming PRG's like that seem to be a thing of the past unfortunately. and every so often i got back to it.... Its leveling system was a lot less prone to abuse then FF8 as well.

So dark souls worth getting? i have had my eye on it for ages but my internet is so crappy i thin i would be missing out on the better parts of it without stable online.
Hyped for fallout 4 though!
Trevor-johnson [1875304]

well ive just started on dark souls so ill keep u posted man, im under the impression its a pretty massive game world even without the online stuff, again ill let you know.

hmm ill have to see whats goin on with the new fallout game, as enoyable as they were i always felt they needed a lotta improvement

Elder Scrolls Online can be somewhat challenging. It is a very fun game and I recommend it to all looking for a good RPG.

Something I think you might enjoy would be Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2. Look into it. It goes sort of like this. Many upon many classes and races. Races have special traits. Each class is different as in Warriors well are frontline they double as breaking shit taking dmg. Rogues are needed to remove traps, pick locks, ect. Clerics and Paladins heal. ect. Each class is very different and diverse. Not one class share the same skills. I mean some kind of do but barely. You technically can solo the games on easy difficulty but hey why not get a few party members. WHICH you can also control to come with you. It is a very slow paced game. Fights are hard. You have to pause the fights frequently to make each character do their next move. You don't have to pause it but it helps. They are very long games with pretty decent story lines. They're is so much more that i didn't get into but seriously I think this is the type of game you are looking for so give it a try.

Stonemason beat me to it but I was going to day D&D 5E since you're new to it. Hiroshaman mentioned Neverwinter Nights 1&2 which essentially IS D&D in a limited capacity, so it'd be a good first step to see how you feel about it. You can get NWN+NWN 2 off GoG. https://www.gog.com/game/neverwinter_nights_2_complete

I've been looking into D&D myself, a place to get started online is www.roll20.net I've been doing some research into starting myself, people are easy to find, and I have several I know that want to. A DM isn't though and I just got pretty busy in RL and starting as a DM with limited time could be daunting. If you're wondering what the hell is D&D exactly you can watch others play it here and get an idea. http://geekandsundry.com/shows/critical-role/

Anyways if you're more interested it takes a lot of time and research just to figure out what basic resources you need without someone to help you. So if after that you're still interested I can at least introduce you to the basic resources as it took me a while to find them.

@Trevor "mentaler, this is gunna like, totaly blow ur mind, but i OWN a ps1 :O!!, its like, totally old n stuff :D" comments like this tell me that you're just bored of the same crap over and over much like most of the older generation of gamers myself included. Every new game we try it's the same old junk, even ones hailed as innovative we look back 15 years and see ones that had all this "innovative" stuff and more.

When it hits that point like it did for me anyways I started looking into D&D and that definitely seems like it's the way to go. I'd always heard of it and been curious but without someone to show you what the hell it is exactly it can be hard to figure out well...what the hell it is exactly.

Step 1: Get Neverwinter (that's a given regardless, also if you look in comments section on NWN people mention tons of mods, player stories etc.)
Step 2: Watch a few episodes of Critical Role (at this point you can decide if there is even going to be a step 3)

Check out Divinity: Original Sin, if you're looking for a classic RPG experience. It's even better if you can find a friend to enjoy its excellent cooperative play with you.
There's an incredibly immersive world to explore, and a heavy strategical depth to be found in its combat.
