If u want a reasonable gaming PC without too much cost then desktop is the only way....laptops are always much worse and more expensive.........just go to PCpartpicker and create your build....it has a compatibility checker so its fairly straight forward
though, i would suggest that if you didnt know that you cant "build" a laptop, and dont know what parts to get, it might be better to go and buy a pre-built.
I believe nVidia may be changing that...

There's even one builder making a lappy with 2 gpu's SLI and an option to have it liquid cooled. Portable desktop PC power, love it.
Take a look at MSI website if you're looking for a gaming laptop.
The MSI Ghost Pro with the 4k display looks sweet!
As for making your own laptop, I wouldn't recommend a custom build until you're confident you know what you're doing.
Look around online, there's plenty of instructional videos out there.
As for parts, you'll need:
A case, CPU, RAM, HDD (SSD ideally for gaming for fast r/w speed), GPU, power supply, motherboard, etc.
