I have been playing around in the legal filed for a while and it dawned on me that there should be a way to sue someone that puts a public bounty on you. You would need to find an attorney (maybe build an in city court house). I also think there should be a statute of limitations on how long you have to sue the person.

meh.. I don't really get the point.. perhaps you should work a detailed suggestion before suggesting.. No offence but this isn't really something you can base a mechanism off.
How on earth would this work? I'm not a massive fan of the bounty system, it's too one sided, but this makes literally no sense, at all. A criminally set bounty wouldn't exactly be something you could sue over.
so in a city rampant with crime and corruption, a hardened criminal places bounties on you, which in reality would be your death rather than just hospitalisation, then you want to hire a lawyer to sue them ?
what would stop me just murdering you and your lawyer considering it would be a civil case as its a law suit instead of any legal proceedings, so you'd have no witness protection, so as soon as said person is served they'd just have you murdered ?
so now you are dead and you also got a lawyer killed due to you wanting money from a person that put hits on you
in reality you wouldnt be able to sue them, youd get witness protection, and they would try and arrest them and the hitmen, but in a game where the police are non existant and everything is run by criminals that wouldnt happen either
then why even have the legal field as an option? if you can't use it to apply some legal process on others. As for how it would work players with a bounty or a string of bounties put on their head could use it as an option to limit the impact. as for this being a city of crime and corruption they why even have the option for a doctor in the medical field be able to revive someone? there is always going to be some sort of good to be done that will continue to make the game interesting.
Thank you, we have placed your bounty.
Lol thanks.
So is that how the forum works? You make a suggestion then someone dumps a ton of bounties on you? I would write the code to do the lawsuits myself if they would give me access.
I like your idea since even stronger players will want to spend more on bounties to be anonymous, thus discouraging bullying.
Another interesting thing about this suggestion is that the law starter job is linked to the lawsuit application, encouraging more people to stay beyond getting the 10% crime success bonus.
On the other hand, what happens if the lawsuit wins?
To keep it simple I would say the attorney gets 45% while the victim gets the rest. Just make it for the amount of money that is on the victims head at that time. You could go after peoples property if you wanted to generate extra value/risk but the math for the development guys may get a bit crazy.
What should determine the outcome of the lawsuit? There should also be an extra risk imposed on the victim such that he/she will have to compensate the defense party if the lawsuit fails. Otherwise everyone would be placing anonymous bounties.
The lawsuits success could depend on the amount of job points the attorney uses to fight the case. The same way the class action lawsuit works.
i can appreciate the idea of trying to come with a way to combat bounties, but this one definitely needs some work.
i mean, the attorney gets 45% of what? where does the sum of the money come from? a % of cash on hand? a % of networth? a set value? what if the person doesn't have that money available? if that's the case, what if that debt got bumped to Duke? it would be an affective solution, but it wouldn't make much sense.
i propose something different entirely. for a set value of job points, you can put a restraining order on someone (possibly for someone else), which would work like black listing someone PLUS the added benefit of preventing them from placing bounties on you (for a period of time). or something along those lines. it makes a little more sense to me, but that's just my opinion.
Well, it's pretty clear we have necessitated the introduction of a police force in torn...
I've always wanted bad guys in the game :P
The sum of the money refers to the value of the bounty placed, although the amount involved should be large enough for this to actually be worth it. In my opinion, for the case where the lawsuit fails and money is given to the defense party as compensation, making the victim in debt to Duke should not be a problem if the victim has not exceeded his/her loan limit. If the victim does not pay his/her debt on time then the interest rates will kick in and Duke will eventually unleash his wrath.
Your idea of putting a restraining order would work, but it doesn't give weaker players a way to bite back at stronger bullies. Moreover you wouldn't know who will bounty you until someone actually does it (and when it happens there can be 10 placed).
Police are non-existent in Torn? Then who the hell is sending me to jail?
so you're suing the person placing the bounty for the cost of the bounty?
so, for example, on a $100,000 bounty, you would sue someone for the $100,000, splitting it with the attorney? because that doesn't seem like it would hurt the placer very much at all. and anything more than the cost of the bounty just seems like it would negate the purpose of bounties.
i don't think there's really a way for bountied people to "bite back" at the placer. unless like, suing basically claimed the bounty without actually hospitalizing the bountied person? so the placer knows that the bounty the placed was paid to the person they placed it on without actually putting them in the hospital. so they just gave money to the person they were trying to pick on. that seems like a pretty good bite, right?
Yes that's what was intended. If the lawsuit is a success then the bounty will be ridden off with the bounty money split between the attorney and the victim. If that is not enough, then reasonably the prosecuted party should be jailed. Whether or not this hurts CE is yet to be decided.
