Forum Voting System

I'm thinking since forum posts can be edited, the up and down votes given to a post should also be editable. An idea may start off as a bad one, but after receiving constructive feedback it may develop into something good. A good one may also turn bad due to various reasons.

The current voting system, however, does not allow a change in vote.
Two problems may arise:

1. New threads are created just to have a fresh start instead of modifying the older threads.

2. A good suggestion that is developed from a bad suggestion still has to overcome all the down votes that are intended for the bad suggestion.

3. A good suggestion is down voted due to misconception on the voter's side and the voter is not able to change his/her vote even after the OP has corrected those misconceptions.


There are two solutions (feel free to suggest others):
1. Disallow post editing (which of course can be problematic if you have typos or a sudden change of idea)

2. If a post is edited, voters are able to change their votes once (of course their votes can remain the same). Subsequent editing done to the post will allow subsequent voting changes to be made.


What I'm suggesting is to go with solution 2. Thank you for your time.

I think you'll find most people will rate based on their first perception and then not return.

The current system encourages people to form well thought out ideas before posting them instead of relying on others to build the idea for them from an undeveloped thought.

I think what you're proposing would ruin a good system.

That makes sense. But I just feel that it's weird when posts can be edited as and when the poster likes but votes are set in place once voted.

If a post gets 100+ up votes after several editing, it doesn't really mean that it deserves that 100+ up votes. Some voters may like the second version of the post but not the third version. This scenario also applies to down votes.

A good system should have a voting system that reflects the true opinions of the voters. Even if voters tend to not come back to review the post, not having the function to change a vote denies voters who do come back to reassess their choice.

Besides, most people wouldn't be able to come up with the perfect suggestion without taking in feedback from others. After all, suggestions may affect the whole torn community and opinions from others should also be taken into consideration.
