I was an AMD fanboy but after looking into this Intel wins by far, AMD is like #16 on the list, so it really does come down to what you can afford these days, which is sad.

In most general purpose applications you even notice the difference between AMD and Intel.

An AMD FX8350 8 core 4GHZ, is like £100. And it can be easily overclocked. You won't notice any difference between it and an i7 in the latest game, as CPU barely uses 20% nowadays in games, it's 100% GPU driven.

Standard stuff like browsers, music, you won't notice any different in terms of microseconds. Latest Intel CPU is all about low energy usage etc, so good for laptops. But for everything else, no point in dishing out double for an Intel compared to an AMD, the Intel benefits are negligible for the price.

Better to spend that extra £100 on a better GPU.

Sort of, overclocking is a tricky subject in itself in that it puts a lot more strain on the hardware - which more likely than not results in hardware failure a heck of a lot faster than if it's not being overclocked. It also tends to require a lot of extra other things like cooling systems to keep everything cooled down (all those "liquid cooled rigs" for example lol) ... to each their own.

It is funny seeing GPU's getting so damn powerful these days though, TPTB would rather have us "stupid consumers" use arrays or networks of average computers strung together than just give us the damn quantum tech already. It's like here ya go, here's a 2000 dollar dedicated graphics computer you can insert into your main system, but we're not gonna give you the full upgrade yet.

Buy hey, I'm "OIL" and still waiting for my damn flying cars too. WTF?
