Is there a limit on the number of group attacks you can participate in per day? Have tried to join a few Scrooge fights and getting an error message that the maximum number has been reached- unsure if this means the maximum number of people who can attack at once or if it is a personal limit.

There is no limit to group attacks per day, the limit on Scrooge is the limit on the amount of people involved in an attack.
You can't have more than ~40 people attacking somebody at the same time, so you will be unable to join the attack after the first few dozens.
