1) Bad spelling

Employers tell us all the time that one of the biggest things that frustrate them is spelling errors on the application. This may seem like a no-brainer, but go back and take a look at your application to make sure everything is absolutely perfect. In fact, we recommend having someone else take a look at your apps to see if you missed anything. I always do this and am really surprised by what I missed!

2) Wrong contact information

So, youve checked your spelling, but youre still not hearing back from employers? Give your application another once-over to be completely positive that your contact information is 100 perfect correct. We actually heard from a job seeker who told us that he accidentally put his friends phone number downand the friend got hired! Imagine how frustrating it is for an employer to try to contact you and get the wrong person. Not cool.

3) Inappropriate email address

Picture this a hiring manager looks over your perfect resume and decides that out of hundreds of applications, they want to get you in for an interview. Sweet! They pull up your email address to try to schedule something and they see 2lazy4U@email.com. This makes the applicant look pretty unprofessional and the manager decides to move on to someone else. This does happen. A lot. Take another look at your email address to make sure that theres nothing that can be looked at in a bad light. I recommend creating a new email address just for your job search. Something simple like firstname.lastname@email.com will definitely be professional and easy for the employer to remember.

4) Texting lingo

Your email address is in good shape, and they decide to reach out and schedule an interview. You respond with: Nice! What wrks 4 U? Not only is this unprofessional and lazy, but it makes them think you are not too serious about finding a job, or that you might be lazy and unprofessional on the job itself. Every single correspondence you have with an employer should be very professional, no matter how comfortable you are with them. Spell out everything, use correct grammar and be respectful.

5) Weird voicemail greeting

Instead of emailing you about coming in for an interview, the employer decides to call you. Your application has really impressed them and theyre really excited to talk to you about the position. You dont recognize the number and let it go to voicemail, forgetting that you changed your voicemail the night before after a few too many drinks with your friends. Employers have told us they have heard some really gross things on voicemails that have made them hang up immediately and take the applicant out of consideration for the job. Also, double check to be sure your voicemail isnt full. Employers tell us this happens a lot too and can get your application put back to the bottom of the pile.
