How do you you use the "insurance" option and what does it do?
When the dealer hits an ace, you have the option to get insurance. You can only put a max of half your bet into your insurance, but if you win you make 2:1 that. To win an insurance, the dealer must draw a blackjack. Pretty simple, if the dealer hits a blackjack you lose your original wager but win the insurance bet.
I'll give you a super solid piece of advice. NEVER use insurance. It is NEVER mathematically better to take Insurance, in the current set of blackjack rules.
He is probably trying to get the Twenty-One honor which requires winning a Natural, Five card Charlie, Double down and Insurance on Blackjack. I remember insurance being the last thing I needed and it was indeed horrible odds. It took like 10 tries (when the dealer actually had an ace) before I finally won via insurance.
