It doesn't do much. It's just to look cool. Maybe people will respect your posts more if you have more of it?
Each time you get upvoted, you get +1. Each time you get downvoted, you get -1. If you're on 0, and get downvoted, you stay on 0.
One other thing it does: If you have 1,000 or more, legend tells that you get access to a special, "VIP" forum...

It is good for nothing. You will get a shitty forum called vip forums at 1000 karma though.
