Hi, advert here... I am sharing my very simple guide for new Torn players to "Get Started" in the game. Just remember to do basic missions first, as these are tutorials to help you become familiar with Torn City.
1 - Everyday, you can buy 100 items at the city stores. Most of these items can be sold at a higher price, so ask around! Find someone trustworthy that you can trade with. I still buy 100 items from city stores daily, as it is a source of easy cash.
2 - Visit the item market (not to be confused with city stores). Items bought here do not count toward the 100 maximum, so shop away! You can check market value (click the "eye" icon, then click on "value") for the average price of how much an item sold for the previous day. If you need to sell items here (i.e. you don't have bazaar yet), selling at just under market value is good strategy. Don't dump all 100 items at once though... it is good habit to dump slowly, as prices do change frequently! A good idea is to dump 5 to 10 at a time :) try to stick close to the market trend, for maximum profit! (NOTE : some items do sell at slightly above market value).
3 - Try to hit level 15. Level 15 unlocks the travel agency, so you can fly abroad for items (see Illum's Guide to Traveling and Adobi's guide to flying for travel tips). Again, items bought abroad do not count towards the 100 maximum daily, so as soon as you hit level 15, try flying for items! Most players make money this way, as certain items do sell for more back in Torn city. For help reaching level 15, please see Baldr's Basic Advice.
4 - Visit education at the West side of the city. Here you can take courses. Complete courses to unlock certain perks. There is no wrong way to take courses, but some courses do offer better perks. Check Midrasche's Education Guide for New Players for more information on courses.
5 - Apply for a job, either in the city (city job) or at player-owned companies. Jobs can be a source of good money. Jobs are also a source of trains, which basically increases your working stats, so you can apply for even better jobs. Don't forget to check the various company specials! If you want to try your hand in directing a company, this guide is a good place to start.
6 - The points market is a good place to store your money so you wont get mugged! You can also spend the points you accumulated at the points building to unlock more areas of the game, like the bazaar, stock market, and race track. A bazaar can be a good idea if you're aiming to be a tradesman! 7 - You can also use points to unlock a display cabinet. Here you can place items for others to see. You can view other display cabinets while flying, so you know what other fellow collectors are looking for! Trading with fellow collectors (i.e. item trading) can be fun as well!
8 - Once you have a decent amount of money rolling in, it is time to look for better property. Go to estate agents and either buy or rent new property. You can also marry and move into your spouse's property. You can also buy properties from other players (via trade or at the estate agents). Better Property = Higher maximum Happy.
9 - Visit the gym and spend E to train stats. remember that it's Strength (damage dealt) versus Defense (damage prevented), and Speed (chance to hit) versus Dexterity (chance to avoid getting hit). Also, a higher Dexterity means a higher chance to stealth, which means the victim would not know who hit him (only that "someone" did). Higher Happy = Better Gym Gains.
10 - Do some crime. Start with the easy crimes first, and work your way up. There is a hidden nerve experience bar, and as your crime experience increases, your nerve bar increases by increments of +5. For more information about crime, please see Nash's Guide.
11 - Go for merit points! Merits is an easy way to grow in the game. There are multiple ways to get merits, so don't forget to read up on how to get them! Tempest's Guide to Easy Merits is a good place to start. Merit points can be used for upgrades, improving your "character" in the game.
12 - Remember that there is no wrong way to play the game. Joining a faction that "aligns" with your play-style (i.e. your style is aligned with the faction perk tree) is a good way to progress in the game. Also remember that joining a faction is a good way to meet and chat with awesome people!
13 - When you unlock racetrack, try your hand at racing! I used Baldr's guide to get me started.
14 - [NEW] There is a new update called RANKED WARRING in which factions fight other factions to climb up a leaderboard, whether win or lose the faction gets "advanced weapon and armor caches" and these new armor and weapons can potentially sell for millions or even billions of torn dollars. Some factions are now resorting to "cache farming", creating factions for the sole purpose of earning caches, selling them, and distributing the wealth among the members.... however, there are also "scammer" factions out there who abuse new players and use them for their own gain, please be aware! There are also legitimate farming factions who do distribute the wealth fairly. If in doubt, always check the friend/enemy ratio of faction leadership and top members, or even better, ask around!
Torn City is huge, so don't forget to explore everywhere! Check out the auction house. Visit the church and the casino. Visit the dump. Pay a visit to the loan shark if you need extra cash. You can also make a deposit at the local bank to gain a little bit of interest. Visit the hospital, or the city jail. Check out the different chat rooms of the game. Visit the different forums (the Q & A forum is also a good source of knowledge) The possibilities are endless!
This is meant to be an introduction to the game, and not an all-encompassing guide. Another viable way to play the game (although less popular) is to level hold. For more information about level holding, you can give me a chat :)
