If it is for cash a good start is to progress through the story until you unlock the ability to renovate buildings. This happens quite early on and you will be given the supplies for your first building.
After that you will have to get supplies yourself and a good way to do that is boarding enemy ships. Try not to sink them as that reduces the amount you get. You will get building supplies and tobacco from them, the tobacco you can sell for decent money. Use your supplies to upgrade your ship and renovate buildings.
Eventually as you progress further through the story you can form your own fleet and send them on missions. You do this by boarding enemy ships and after completing the objectives you add it to your fleet. You can send them on missions from the captains cabin, at first the money is not great but it gets better as you unlock harder missions.
There are limits to how far you can upgrade you ship depending where you are in the story so to take on tougher ships for better rewards you will want to progress the story as well. There are also warehouses dotted around too which have decent amounts of building supplies in them and they restock after some time.
