Torn is one of the few places on the internet I visit that is basically ad-free. That makes it rather unique but I also noticed ads don't bother me enough on places like Facebook for me to complain about them, especially if they are personalized ads.

Ads obviously mean more money, and with more money, comes more resources for game development and Torn adverts around the internet. I can only imagine how big Torn would be if it had a proper PR team. Mafia Wars by Zynga was huge, with 20 million monthly players.

I wouldn't mind having ads if it meant bigger, better and faster updates. Unobtrusive ads, so no pop-up ads.

Ads are a little more complex than you’re making it seem. I can assure you, Ched feels they aren’t worth the hassle or remotely necessary, is the shortest answer.

to elaborate,
being part of an ad program puts us at the mercy of the advertiser’s wants. If the advertiser decides a feature is too violent or features other things they don’t approve of, we either don’t get the feature or don’t get the ads.

Ads, no matter how unobtrusive, still cause the site to slow down, which is something torn’s been good about trying to avoid as best as possible.

CPM for ads on a website are pretty shit on the overall. Websites like Facebook make waaaaaay more money selling your personal information than they do on ads. Most websites these days are being forced to move from an ad based income to selling their users some sort of membership to survive, and dropping ads completely (or at least for their members).

ads would break the flow of the site. If they wanted to incorporate ads, they’d need a complete redesign. And based on my other points, that would, in no way, be worth the effort.

the years of making money purely from ads are behind us. Have been for sometime. The future is partnerships with other brands and selling your user base membership perks.

No.

1)Ads might make Torn look shoddy. This might convey Ched willing to anything to earn money. Torn might lose its credibility.

2) It might distract users from the actual stuff as click-on ads will take users to different website and take the attention away.

3) We already have monthly subscribers, DP sales to cover cost.

4) Being ad free is what makes Torn unique from other games.

Damn no, ads are just terrible for people that dont understand how add blockers works. It would indeed distract people and take them away from Torn.

Subscriber status and donator status / boxes should be good income for Ched.

If they really want to generate more money they should implement just purely visual / cosmetic extra's that people can pay real $ for.

Want your character to have pink hair? Sure $2 or $5 to unlock a bunch of different hair colours.
Want a silly frame around your profile picture? Sure $2 for the sparkly one or one with weed symbols.

I dont know, many games have those and they dont break the balance of the game. They should also not make the game symbols or items more confusing with different colours, but a balance can be found.

Myself would probably never buy cosmetic upgrades, but who knows.

How about a super premium service where you can create your own mug (cup of coffee) ingame. With an image and flavour text. It would be account bound, but you can put it in display or in a new type of galary in your profile. They can go from $50-100 real dollars and you get the mug also send to you in real life.

No ads, NO. I agree with Iribuya, Torn makes enough money with DPs/Subscribers. I've played games with Premium versions, and it always ends up that you can't enjoy the game if you don't have it. And believe it or not, Torn doesn't need more players. We already have more than enough companies, factions, etc. And we certainly have enough devs. They hardly do anything as it is, as far as I can tell.

The only reason I play torn comfortably on mobile is the assurance that a single wrong click is not gonna open up 5 windows with ads.
I would definitely say no to ads. Ads would mean I would be restricted to playing on pc with ad blockers and it would cripple my activity severely.
