Spouse is wife or husband, you can advertise in the newspaper for one, If you live in a private island with an airstrip, you will find one quickly. ask in your faction if anyone else is looking for a spouse.

As stated above, a spouse is another player you can marry (girl or boy), and you can share a property. Which can be a rental or owned by either one of you. With a spouse, you will get days married merits, there is another merit that you both attack someone together as well. I would recommend definitely getting a spouse.
As stated above, you can check for a fac mate to marry, post/search the newspaper, post in Trade Chat, or use the properties forum.

As the benefits of marriage have pretty much already been covered, I'm going to go into some of the downsides...
One... being male, the number of available mates for you is somewhat limited. To my knowledge, Torn doesn't recognize same-sex marriage. At the same time, the number of male players (or, at least, that play as male, since some females may play as male just to not be bothered by internet creeps) drastically outnumber the female players.
Two... most of the benefits falter if your spouse isn't active. For instance, I've paid at least three weeks of PI upkeep (about 350,000 per day, so around 8 mil) on my spouse's PI because they haven't been around. Divorce isn't worthwhile, as I'd lose all of that progress to the merits for marriage.

That makes things easier, then. The problem of being ghosted still stands, though.
Being ghosted isn't great, but you do get to stay in an island. If you had access to the vault, even better. If not its still a saving in the rental of one as the upkeep would still need to be paid. Ghosted or not there are merits coming for commitment. Save in the bank until you can afford your own island.
