when i go to race, and click official events, it shows me my list of cars, but if i don't select a car and instead click anywhere in the city, it enters me into the race with a random car without me confirming the car.

I don't think this is a bug. I believe it selects the last car that you raced with automatically
That’s intended, was changed some time ago to act like that - if you want to change the car right away after you joined an official race.
