My external hard drive has stopped working. I’m assuming it’s the SATA. However I’m putting it back together and now I’m at the fan.

Does the fan blow inwards at the hard drive or does it blow outwards away from the hard drive?

If there isn't two fans for a push/push system. You want the single fan acting as a exhaust fan. If you put it as a intake, then your just sucking in hair and dirt. And it'll stay in your enclosure.

Ummm....what?

Why did you open your computer to fix an external drive? I hope that was just a typo.

Drives are at the front, fan at the back, so why did you remove your fan? It shouldn't have been necessary.

Does your computer have more than one fan?

Fans connected to the case blow outward. As judge_doom said, inwards would suck hair/dust into your computer. However, fans sitting anywhere else are suppose to blow onto the component they are attached to.

Also, SATA cables rarely break. If you can't read the drive, it's probably because of the drive, not the cable.

He is talking about the external HDD enclosure and not his computer ... hopefully anyways.

And even then ... not every fan connected to the case blows outward. Some have to suck air in as well, that's why in general nowadays they come with dust filters.

Some and some don't. However, if the fan is sucking air in, that means that there is liokely another fan pushing air out somewhere else in that system.

Actually computers don't have to suck air in at all, and unless you're using HEPA filters, it's a very bad idea.

The reason some computers come with filters is because the company that built the computer knows the filters won't work. They want your computer to break so you buy a new one.
