i feel like missions for me are too tough to even bother doing them anymore, i'm almost fully capped on dukes agent standing, and made the mistake of completing the missions that allow for very hard missions. it's to the point where i'm lucky if even one mission a week is doable without the use of 4+ temp stat boosters. last month i had a level 81 target that ended up getting me the vae victis merit and i spent probably 6 or 7 mil on just that one person. maybe i'm doing things wrong, or maybe the difficulty curve just isn't worth it to spend this much money. should i look through the guides and try to find some other way of going about this? or just give up on missions for a while (or fail every single one for a month?)

Faction mates can be real helpful
I'm on the hard missions. I generally don't have many problems. The trick is to see exactly what it's asking for. Sometimes you can skirt around it by doing say killing the target with your best weapon then when he out of the hospital do it exactly hoew it wants. Feel free to reach out directly if you want. mission credits are always worth getting, arguably some of the BEST items in game are Books, and you have a chance of getting them if you are a subscriber OR getting them for mission credits if you are lucky, but theres also many other worthy items you can pick up in exchange for credits, so always do the missions just get help from stronger players from faction or even go as far as paying someone to help you
I get the rank very hard on mission today. Is there any tie after that like extreme or nightmare?
that should be the top, but yeah, some are hard enough that you can't do them on your own
Just decline them and wait for some easier ones
Mission Targeta often used on multiple missions and for different Players at the time and often used as chain targets ..
You can watch and wait till they come out of hospital with low life or ask other faction mates help with Temps and damage...
Or straight decline if it is too hard or requires wasting energy ammo or money like Field trip to casino one...

If your missions are to hard just wait a month and train hard, after that you should be good for a little while, you can also try taking Vicodin, this gives a good temporary jump to your stats, and if your still having trouble you can ask a friend to take the target down for you so you can hit them when they come out of the hosp.
