so things like crazy straws can sell up to 1000 dollars but why would someone buy it other than to sell it again at a higher price to someone else when there is no use for them as far as I know, where is the demand coming from for these items?

There is not much of a real demand except to make money. Some people collect these items, but apart from that they can be like loose stock shares (not in a block) that people buy and sell to make money.
They can also be useful for things like the trashing merit but that's a really narrow use for it and definitely isn't the cause of all the buying lol

Just don't list $50M worth of stuff at once without some sort of mug protection.
Crazy straws are not very liquid, i.e. they might not sell very quickly when you need money unless you sell them way below what they're valued at.
If you want to store small amounts of cash in items, there are certain items that you can sell to the city for about the same as they sell for on the item market (certain cars, grenades, etc).

oh, I agree, it's not a good choice. And there will also be people who just like to collect crazy straws.
Having run the API reports on Torn display cases, I can say that for every item in Torn that isn't rare, there is someone collecting it in bulk and storing it in their display case :)

I did that to hide leftovers from muggers, but with ammo cos it could actually be useful someday.

sometime useless items are given purpose and market value of that item can go from $1,000 to $100,000,000, and if you happen to be hording that item, well you become very rich very quick
