I equipped a light to my secondary. In order to engage the bonus (-3 opponent accuracy, -2 opponent stealth), does the weapon need to be used in the battle, or is that bonus automatically effective?

thinking about defensive use. if the weapon needs to be used to engage the bonus, i need to adjust my defensive battle settings to heavily weight the secondary weapon, right?

The bonus is effective on the turn the weapon is used.

Sure, you can use your secondary weapon in a defense, but typically it's going to be a worse weapon than your primary.
