I very vaguely remember seeing something about being addicted to alcohol (candy too??) on a forum post or somewhere else after consistently taking said items for a long time. Is this true? Or complete rubbish?

Nope, you can only be addicted to drugs. At most you could have your title changed to alcoholic but it does not affect your game play.
