i know the item trench coat is a clothing item. but i have fought other players wearing it so shouldn't it be with the armour section?

Negative. It provides zero defensive buffs. You would take the same damage as if you were wearing nothing, as opposed to a trench coat.
Some clothes show up over armor in fights :) Some show up under armor. No clothing type item gives any sort of protection for wearing it though.
My trench coat gives me a +3 to my armor class.
I believe trench coat used to be treated as an armour item. I heard that's why it's still in the pool of prizes you can get from "mystery item" on the wheel of awesome, alongside combat armour pieces.
I just wear coats to hide my armour... not that you get much tactical benefit but it's fun.
it tangles melee weapons. well worth the money!
