Me too they are so stupid.
Once you hit level 5, you'll receive one new mission at new day (midnight Torn time). You can have a maximum of three active missions at a time. Unfortunately there is nothing fast in this game so patience is needed. Right now though you can enjoy the Halloween even while it's still going on. You can read about it in the newspaper. Baldr has the holy grail of new player guides that will help you get going in game.

This is a game designed to have a handful of short-term payoffs, but a lot of long term pay off as well. There are people who have been playing for almost 20 years. If everything was easy to get and could happen at the drop of a hat, then they would be done.
