Go players

I’m just wondering if there is anyone out there that plays go

Is it hard to learn? I've seen like a manga/anime as a kid on it and seemed kinda cool.

I play, it's not that hard honestly. People think it is because it looks intimidating. Especially the larger boards. The game is Area Control. White always goes first, but black can get a handicap for it. You place pieces alternating untill both players can't or won't place a piece. In the end you count the spaces you control(that can be a bit hard) and subtract the pieces you have taken. A good game has scores maybe 5 points separating each other. The only thing you have to keep in mind is the Ko rule.

I used to play a fair bit, when I was in college mainly. Never was particularly good, but I'd play with a few other students there, and enjoyed it. I still play on online-go.com, but not often. It's not a shirt and quick game, and I don't have a lot of free time now.

Seconding Cassie here - it's actually very easy to learn enough to start playing. Literally ten minutes and you're in your first game. It's the tactics and strategy that take time.

There's an old Go proverb: "A new player should lose their first fifty games as quickly as possible". It's like Chess, "minutes to learn, a lifetime to master".

I am the president of the go club at my university and attend in-person tournaments in the United States. I would love to teach anyone how to play if they'd like to learn!

The proverb mentioned above is quite common, and often people will even say to lose 100 instead of 50 just to get the point of playing more games for exposure across.

I've played reversi always thought about trying go

I recently found about Go two weeks ago, through the Path of Exile discord of all things (am also a beginner on PoE, but I'm on pause with that one now bc no time). I was itching for something like battleships at the time or PvP tactics (well for years now really, but Chess just doesn't appeal to me much. And Civ is just too long for me). So finding out about Go made me happy. I like the aesthetic. At first I thought Gomoku == Go though. I got acquainted with Gomoku a week before that, and thought that was it. I think I checked it out randomly on my copy of Clubhouse Games.

Spending time with Go the past two weeks through OGS and I suck badly rofl. Hoping to get better at it though.

I'm quite surprised that this thread exists as I specifically looked through Torn forums just now to see if there's other Go players perhaps haha. It was still in the first page of the "Hobbies" section. Didn't try to search for the search term as "Go" is just not gonna pop up with how it's named.
