It all depends on how much E you burn. You advance through each of the gyms that way. You don't need to buy all the gyms, but there is a merit for each of the levels that you complete.
Install TornTools and it can give you a gauge on how far you are to the next gym.

Frontline is the 25e str/SPD special gym, which requires you to have those two stats 25% higher than your defensive stats - there's one like that for def/dex tooo
Other than that, there's 4 gyms that train only one stat at a slightly higher rate, though each of those has to have their respective stat at 25% higher than your second highest stat, meaning you can only unlock one of these at any given time.
You can have both a dual stat and single stat gym open at the same time, there's ratios you can use to train,3/4 stats in these gyms, or you can simply whore one stat (or even slightly favour either offenses or defenses) and train 2 stats in special gyms :)
Then there's SSL, which requires you tocripple yourself take less than 150 Xanax+xtc forever to maintain unlock (and costs 500m cuz reasons >.>) But just don't ;) it's not worth it if you're trying to stay competitive

Also you need to have George's unlocked for the higher gyms.
