You can buy plushies and flowers abroad, for a few thousand, then when you come back to torn they sell for a much higher price, usually about a mil for a trip
You can bring things back from abroad based on where you go the recommended purchase varies to make money (or lose it if you buy wrong)
You can Hunt in South Africa (not recommended outside of hunting event)
You can rehab in Switzerland (necessary as you should be using 3 xanax a day)
You can fly for merits (50 trips per country and days in the air merits)
You can fly to Cayman Islands to use the bank (for very low interest - better to invest in stock market)

No purpose, as it's not required to play Torn. It could help your gameplay, but again...not required.
It opens up a whole new level of making money by profiting from buying and selling plushies. Which helps you buy Xanax which gives you great gym gains.
You will need to fly to Switzerland then to detox or you risk being thrown out of education classes and certain companies. As well as overdosing.
Some of Dukes missions will also mean flying abroad. I'd recommend heading to Mexico for jaguars to start with. Make sure you time it right so you're buying and back on a plane or you risk getting mugged on each visit.
