at my current level is travel the best way to earn money or are there other methods i can use which are faster and can yield higher amounts?

Bounty selling is also a very viable option (making around 2Mn a week). Easy sources:
- Bounty Hunter's Guild
- Nebula
- Bounty Depot (or just The Depot)
If you want to get a leg up quickly your best options are:
- Sell losses
- Buy Donator Packs (IRL cash required)
- Join a supportive Faction who will sort you out with basic kit, banking/stock buddies, etc. to get you started.
- Ranked wars, as recommended above.

Pretty much the only way to make any substantial amount of money without insanely good RNG/luck with the exception of RW and maybe mugging if you're good at it.
Buying stocks/bonds too - if you get ones which provide energy (FHC, 100 energy, cans) use these to support your efforts in wars, ultimately it's flying for plushies until you can reach that.
Saying that I found Cesium in the city during my early days and that helped loads so keep an eye out in the city for something because you never know.
Torn = slow.
