Problem is the way scaling works no matter how much/little you get it'll always be underwhelming at any point in the game.

In case this additional data is useful, we moved to Crimes 2.0 about 2 months ago, and my take has been about $161M in that period of time. $1.61M plus a couple years of arsons could = $3.5M.
Mine only increased slightly, crimes 2.0 but most income was from items so it didn't count, I wonder if "average market value" of items should count towards the "lifetime income" though.

Maybe if it's based on yearly avg value. Current as noted above could be manipulated in pretty extreme ways on an alliance level.
Personally, I'm looking at eggs as a multi-year timeline. Crimes 2.0 has earned me over ~$450m annually so if I get any, I'm keeping them for a few years to let that build.

They changed how all eggs work. They used to bestow their gifts when you found them. Now they bestow them when you eat them (along with 6 hours booster CD). The nature of all the boosts changed.

15-20% ROI is possible almost no matter how much money you have, so if you can't increase your total crime income by that much in a year it's better to use an egg and re-invest. If you have less money and thus higher ROI options in things like stocks, that number goes up, meaning you'd need to increase your total crime income by even more to justify NOT using the egg.
In short, for most people it makes sense to use the egg right away. Super new players will certainly increase by over 100% in a year though and should wait.
But if you have 5b in crime income and can't reliably get more than 20% in a year with investments you'd still need to pull off 1B+ in cash over the next year to justify not cracking the egg.
In my case with hacking I can probably pull 2.37b unless I'm forced into crimes 2.0 and am at 5b so for me it doesn't make sense to open until forced into crimes 2.0 once I am it makes sense to open immediately as I'll be unable to continue increasing it at such a rate.
If I were to somehow stay in crimes 1.0 long enough, the time to crack would be at around 12b total netting a paltry 120m. I can't imagine a single old player in 2.0 (with lots of income from 1.0) not being in a position where cracking immediately isn't the right move.

End of the day though I'd say it's not a big deal no matter what as no matter your position in Torn from new to the oldest most active players 1% of crime income is laughably low, it'd take 5% to bring it even close to the value of some other eggs.
