Newspaper navigation tabs only navigate on text click. They still underline on the area click though.

The underline is a design element of the newspaper, it is not meant to signify the interactive area or be clickable. This is intended.

Did you test my steps or just respond without looking? There's multiple underlines.
When you click on a tab to navigate, it should take you to the new page of the newspaper and typically underlines the page that you are on. But right now, the bug, is when you click outside of the text it underlines, like it h
should be responding, but does not navigate away from the page as it should
He got what you are saying. The extra underline is only visual, it isn’t suppose to navigate.
Move your mouse around for one second and you'll realize they use the same underline graphic for all the headlines, so with varying title widths it's bound to not line up.
Maybe a technical explanation. As you've described, you can only click the actual text - that's because the text itself is the link. The underline is simply a graphic that becomes visible when your cursor is in a certain area (it's not an actual underline on the text field (which is the link) as you may be used to). So with that, it can be argued that moving your mouse just makes a magical line appear, and is completely unrelated to the link whatsoever.
No cursor. My issue is on mobile. If you click in the area to navigate, it should. It doesn't. If it shouldn't, then there should be no extra underline, as there's no cursor to sit there.
There was no action so there should be no visual indication of action.
I can see how my choice of words with click versus tap and my mobile device screenshot being in desktop view could cause confusion.
FWIW, I was able to reproduce the same visual effect you're describing on my Google Pixel 7 / Android 16 clicking off to the side as you mentioned.
The underline is just a stylistic addition to the page, it highlights what section you clicked on mobile (if you clicked outside the text). It is not meant to navigate you away.
