In the late 1880s, Alfred P. Southwick, a Buffalo, New York dentist, witnessed an intoxicated man die instantly and painlessly after touching a live electric generator. This inspired him to propose electrocution as a more humane alternative to hanging for executions, leading to the development of the first electric chair (used in 1890). It's one of those weird historical crossovers between dentistry and capital punishment!
