Nara Medical University Hospital in Japan is running trials for synthetic red blood cell blood known as Hemoglobin Vesicles (HbVs). It is designed to be a highly effective, universal oxygen carrier, with some reports suggesting it may perform as well as or even more effectively than natural blood in delivering oxygen to tissues in emergencies. The kicker, that "universal" means it works with every blood type. If successful, blood banks worldwide will never run out, ever.
