It may be a bit early, but I want to wish everyone a Happy Ramadan, as we draw closer to the month.

Despite all the hard times we are seeing unfold the world over, we need more than ever to stay united and show resilience, and continue on a more righteous path, and Ramadan is a great time for all this. For those curious, here is some information that includes, but not limited to, observing it.

Ramadan is the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar. A time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. It commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him). Observing includes:

• Fasting (Sawm): One of the Five Pillars of Islam, fasting is obligatory for healthy adult Muslims, designed to cultivate self-discipline, gratitude, and empathy for the poor. This last 29-30 days, based on the lunar calendar, starting with the sighting of the crescent moon.

• Daily Routine: The pre-dawn meal is called suhoor, and the meal to break the fast at sunset is iftar. However, not everyone eats full meals, staying instead to just a few dates.

• Prayers: are said as well. Taraweeh, for example, will happen at night after breaking fast, and is in part to reflect on teachings, and strengthen connection. Through this, many will make a point to read the Quran in it's entirety throughout the month.

The focus in much of this, is for increased prayer, reading the Quran, gratitude, charity (Zakat), and abstaining from negative behaviors like gossip or anger.

• Laylat al-Qadr: (the Night of Power) occurs in the last 10 days, believed to be the night the Quran was revealed.

• Eid al-Fitr: After the month ends, it is concluded with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr (meaning "Festival of Breaking the Fast" in Arabic, celebrated to mark the end of the month-long dawn-to-dusk fasting of Ramadan. It signifies a time of gratitude, joy, and spiritual renewal, featuring special morning prayers, communal feasts, charity, and gift-giving.

To clarify for those who don't follow all the boards, I'm an (American) Jew standing in solidarity with all my brothers, sisters and siblings going through rough times. In part, I am making this in part as a show of solidarity, as well as to encourage everyone to stay strong. Although I'd admit, I was debating at first if I should have made a post at all, less my intentions were read wrong. But I can not in my own conscious, stay silent. Not just from the genocide we see go on, but all the Islamophobia running rampant too.

I also want to ask if we can do something as a community, to inspire positivity and lifting each other up through this Ramadan. It does not need to happen in this thread btw, but one where we can share experiences that inspire us to stay on a righteous path, lessons and prayers from the Quran and recitations, or anything that keeps us going forward in general. I think this is increasingly needed now more than ever.

(And as a note I hate to have to include at all. But any trolling will be seen as harassment. Respect those practicing, and those of us joining in solidarity any way we can)

The world doesn’t revolve around one country’s clock or one culture’s calendar. When it’s still February 14 in one place, it’s already February 15 in places like Australia, Japan, or New Zealand. Hell even parts of the US is on 15th of February.

Also, Ramadan isn’t determined by Valentine’s Day or any other. It’s determined by the lunar calendar and moon sighting. The two are completely unrelated. Acting as if someone must wait for a Western holiday to “finish” before expressing goodwill toward Muslims is narrow minded.

You either genuinely don't understand how time zones work, or you assumes the entire world runs on your local timeline.

Neither is a strong look for the great Beerstein.

Smilin-Assassin [965750]

You do you, brother. Timezones must be a foreign concept for him. Perhaps love might be too. But you do you.

And thanks for the reminders. Spread the good, brother!

PS: I have a nice handmade (watercolor painted) schedule sorta thing that one can follow to help them finish the Quran during Ramadan. Might just share it here so erryone can attempt to recite the Quran from start to finish at least once before the last sunset of Ramadan.

Beerstein [1322136]

It would seem the concept of time zones is lost on you since Valentines day is still upon many of us and the event in Torn itself has not ended, yet it is several days until Ramendan. But cry more bitchboy!

SmuggledIn [3082399]

This would be great, and much appreciated! :)

(And yea, you're correct. East coast time, for example, had already been past midnight when he wrote that 🫣 )

.."I also want to ask if we can do something as a community, to inspire positivity and lifting each other up through this Ramadan. It does not need to happen in this thread btw.."

Maybe because I was asking questions beforehand.

It's ok if you don't want to properly join a discussion. But it's also ok to not saying anything at all. The fact is, I couldn't care less about karma points. If I was going to be concerned about anything, it is the type of negativity you all much rather bring, that has no place in this thread. So either be respectful and contribute something useful, or leave it to the countless other threads.

Smilin-Assassin [965750]

Habibi, firstly, happy Ramadan to you! 🤗

Secondly, the concept of time zones is lost not on me but you. You came here telling people they could have waited until 14th is over when it is 15th in basically half of the world and I had to introduce it to you.

As for V day in Torn; well, Torn has its own Calendar which isn't mine or SmuggledIn's. And real life events don't wait for Torn's calendar to catch up either so why should real life people?

Bitchboy? What are you? 13? Your insults are hilarious.

Have a ramen, mate, and cool your head. We can all be adults after the children have been fed. I hope.

PS: Ramadan isn't several days away for everyone. Timezones, buddy. Timezones. 🙂

2 of my coworkers yesterday talked about ramadam starting next week.

Btw i think the appropriate section would be general discussion non related to torn. Usually it is better to leave outside torn both politic and religion.

Good ramadam for whoever will do it.

Typhon [1439845]

Doesn't ramadamamadingdong start on the 17th to the 18th taking into account timezones?

So smiling is a bit of a div. Happy Ramadan (for the 17th) anyway. 🤣

Beerson [1576144]

Religions/National shit doesn't belong in GD, posting it several days early makes it clear that people put it in GD only to karma farm

Smilin-Assassin [965750]

Happy Ramadan to you too, Typhon!

It starts depending on where you are, the sighting of the moon, ans the laws your country follow.

My calendar is saying it will be on 18th. Some other country might say it's going to be 19th for them.

I don't think it'll be 17th anywhere because the lunar calendar says 29th of Sha'ban (the month before Ramadan) falls on 17th of February. (I thought it might be but checking the calendar told me otherwise.)

Even the countries behind us will not be behind 2 days. So..

On a side note, Hijry or lunar calendar days start after sunset. When you said "on the 17th to the 18th..," were you referring to that?

I just might be a div 🥲

It may be a bit early, but I want to wish everyone a Happy Halloween, as we draw closer to the month.
