The Ludlow Amendment was a proposed amendment to the Constitution that would require a national referendum for the US declare war on another nation. This came after many imperialist wars of the late 1800s and early 1900s and a strong isolationist movement after WWI. The biggest contributors to its failure was the fact that it would likely freeze the nation in a time of crisis and that it would remove one of the checks of the legislative branch. Had it passed, it’s very likely that we would not have been involved in Korea or Vietnam. One important caveat is that if the US was attacked, no referendum would need to occur for us to declare war.

In a time where we are debating about war in Iran, I think it will be interesting to hear people’s opinions on this proposed amendment. I personally would like it with the addition that those who vote yes on war would be drafted before those that voted against it

Source I found that’s pretty good
