I've heard it helps RNG. And for merits. Have a look for rosary beads.
Around 2 weeks of daily prayer gives you a merit. That it helps with RNG is a Urban Mythos.
If you cant prove its false it could be true...
I found a skateboard after praying for a while
And lots of people have found them without it...
Because you can burn it down later when you get the proper arson skill...
(there is a merit for praying, and there are a few for donating money - as for what praying itself does: no one knows)
The game uses a book icon for prayer instead of the conventional folded hands, clearly signaling it increases your chances of finding books.
Rosary Beads were added to the game shortly after books were introduced.

I've noticed there may be some correlation between praying twice a day and more or better item finds, but I don't have enough data to see if there is any causation.
