I've always understood the rules as "1 click = 1 server action" at most. But I recently noticed you can just hold down the enter button on slots or the lotto instead of clicking 100 times, so clearly that's not the whole picture.
I've also heard from other users that they run scripts in the chat interface (allowed by staff) that paste content for them. But doesn't that still create a server call to Torn, since the person on the other end sees the typing activity?
So do different rules apply to the chat interface? And if so, would it be allowed to open a chat window with a chosen user via a script and have the script paste the text in, with the user still manually clicking the send button?
I've asked staff about rules in the past, but they contradict each other on occasion, so I figured asking more openly like this makes more sense. Example: I was once told referral links could only be shared with people I know personally, meaning recruiting actual strangers to Torn would be against the rules. After they checked with someone higher up, they had to correct that statement.
On top of that, the rules are spread out way too much, which makes compliance harder than it needs to be:
Rules General: https://www.torn.com/rules.php#tab=torn_rules
Forum scripting rules: https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=67&t=16037108&b=0&a=0
Websocket rules: https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=1&t=16534470&b=0&a=0
And sending scripts in for review to the assigned staff doesn't really work either. On the websocket rules: so someone who isn't logged in can scrape the forum sites, but if we're logged in, we'd be the ones on the hook for it?
Then there are edge cases like the Lustdragon ban, who took advantage of negative balances. Didn't look like bug abuse to me, but it was a perma fed. Does that mean if I found a stock that correlates with a real life stock, figured out the correlation delay between them and used that to my advantage, it would count as bug abuse?
The inconsistencies are what really get me though. Another user told me staff whitelisted his script that programmatically opens new tabs, two years ago. Someone also shared a script with me that used websockets without my knowledge, since I never reviewed or used it. When I recently looked into it, it connects to all available websockets simultaneously. As a noob with websockets I have no clue what's allowed there, so I just don't touch those.
In another case, someone applied and admitted they also had an older account with better stats. I reported it and staff said: not enough evidence. What's better than their own admission?
And I made a script that used click elements (purely cosmetic, no server calls), and bogie told me not to. But it was within the rules, and going by Chedburn's quote: "Assuming this rule is followed, go wild!". The script review staff told me to ask bogie about it, otherwise I wouldn't have bugged him. So it was allowed scripting that bogie told me not to do, but not following the word of admins/devs/mods results in a ban. What's the right action there?
TLDR: guess I'm more confused and frustrated than anything, by how inconsistently the rules get applied, how vague they often are, and how much of it feels like luck depending on who you ask.
