The trick to the apple truck riddle is to take it in steps, you dont make the whole trip at once. Travel 1/3 of the way with 1k apples 3 times, you get 2001 apples with 667 miles left. Then 2 trips with 1k apples twice for 500 miles. You have 1k apples left and 167 miles left to go. 1000-167 = 833.
