On day one in Torn I was mostly fixated on saving enough money to buy a hammer. I spent my first decade in Torn floundering around and not really finding the money was sticking around - it was only after I switched to a DA that the arrest income meant I had to develop a wealth strategy. it took me 10 years to get to a net worth of $8bn, and the next 5 to get to $80bn. Here's what I learned:
THE WEALTH LADDER
Ten bands, based on your stage in the game. At each one, exactly where the next dollar should go and what to leave alone until you can afford it properly. Buy in this order and every purchase is paying for the next.
FOUR RULES
1. Rank by yield, not by size
Block size is fixed, share price is not. Re-rank before every purchase.
ROI% = annual benefit value / (shares required x live share price) x 100
2. The bank sets the hurdle rate
While the bank has room, never buy a block yielding less than your bank APR.
With 10/10 Bank Interest merits and TCI, that hurdle is roughly 25-29%.
3. Second blocks cost double
Each extra increment of an active stock needs twice the shares of the last, so
its ROI halves. Own one of everything worthwhile before you own two of anything.
4. Stock capital comes back
Bank money is locked until maturity. Stock money stays sellable, which is why the
ladder tips toward stocks the moment yields match.
$0 TO $10M
Don't invest. Build the foundation.
Every dollar spent on stats and education at this stage beats any dividend you could buy with it. Passive income is what you build once the engine runs.
- Get a company job. The salary and job points beat the city jobs long term.
- Start a long education course now. It runs in real time whether you are rich or not.
- Buy happy, not assets. Private Room, then an Apartment.
- Bank in 1-week terms only. You need the liquidity more than the APR.
- Buy no stocks. Even the cheapest block locks up cash you should be spending.
$10M TO $100M
The cheap blocks, in size order
Five blocks of 100k-300k shares. They cost almost nothing relative to what is coming and several of them pay for the rest of your Torn career.
STOCK SHARES PAYS TYPE WHY HERE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EVL 100,000 1,000 Happy / 7d item Cheapest block. Buy first.
TCT 100,000 $1,000,000 / 31d CASH Your first real dividend.
IST 100,000 Free education courses perk Compounds hardest of all.
THS 150,000 Medical supplies / 7d item Free either way.
MSG 300,000 Free classified ads perk Pays back if you sell a lot.
$100M TO $500M
The blocks that print energy
Energy and nerve are not cash, but at this stage they convert into cash faster than a dividend does. MCS and CBD are the two best small blocks in Torn.
STOCK SHARES PAYS TYPE WHY HERE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MCS 350,000 100 Energy / 7d item Best small block. Stacks x10.
CBD 350,000 50 Nerve / 7d item Straight into crimes and OCs.
GRN 500,000 $4,000,000 / 31d CASH Best cash yield under $1bn.
SYM 500,000 Drug Pack / 7d item Reliable resale value.
LSC 500,000 Lottery Voucher / 7d item Low value, low cost. Last.
LAG 750,000 Lawyer card / 7d item Bail discounts for crimes.
$500M TO $2BN
Buy TCI, then fill the bank
The one band where a stock comes before everything, because it makes the bank itself pay more. Buy TCI, spend your merits, then push to the cap on 3-month terms.
STOCK SHARES PAYS TYPE WHY HERE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TCI 1,500,000 +10% bank interest perk Buy BEFORE you max the bank.
- Spend every Bank Interest merit: +5% APR each, ten of them, and they cost no cash.
- Fill the bank to $2bn on the 3-month term. Merits plus TCI puts you around 25-29% APR, and
that number is your hurdle rate for the rest of the ladder. - Mop up the 1m-share blocks with spare cash: YAZ, WSU, TCM, IIL, TCP, EWM, ASS, PRN. None
are urgent, all are cheap.
$2BN TO $8BN
Bank is full. Now the cash dividends.
Everything from here competes against the bank rate you just locked in. TSB is the block most players regret not buying sooner.
STOCK SHARES PAYS TYPE WHY HERE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TSB 3,000,000 $50,000,000 / 31d CASH Strongest cash ROI, usually.
IOU 3,000,000 $12,000,000 / 31d CASH Same block, 1/4 the payout.
FHG 2,000,000 Hotel Coupon / 7d item Steady resale demand.
TGP 2,500,000 Company advertising perk Only if you run a company.
SYS 3,000,000 Advanced firewall perk Insurance, not income.
BAG 3,000,000 Ammunition Pack / 7d item Ammo matched to your weapon.
$8BN TO $20BN
The heavy blocks
5 to 7.5m shares apiece. Big absolute payouts, thinner yields. Always cehck the live ROI.
STOCK SHARES PAYS TYPE WHY HERE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MUN 5,000,000 Energy Drinks / 7d item Worse energy price than MCS.
ELT 5,000,000 10% home upgrade disc. perk Buy BEFORE you upgrade.
TMI 6,000,000 $25,000,000 / 31d CASH Middling. Buy after the rest.
CNC 7,500,000 $80,000,000 / 31d CASH Biggest payout AND block.
TCC 7,500,000 Clothing Cache / 31d item Contents vary. A lottery.
LOS 7,500,000 +25% mission rewards perk Only if you run missions.
$20BN TO $40BN
Final Blocks
The last three blocks are the biggest in the game. PTS is often the highest yielding thing in Torn.
STOCK SHARES PAYS TYPE WHY HERE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WLT 9,000,000 Private jet access perk Fast travel, no det. delays.
HRG 10,000,000 Random property / 31d item 1-in-13 chance. Pure variance.
PTS 10,000,000 100 Points / 7d item Top yield. Weekly sell needed.
- Take a 10* Oil Rig job. It raises your bank cap from $2bn to $3bn.
- Start second increments on your best-yielding actives only. Double the shares means half the ROI, so it still has to beat the bank.
$40BN TO $150BN
Own the business, not the shares
The stock board is finished and its yields are capped. Beyond this point the largest passive earners in Torn are not stocks.
- Run a 10* company: Oil Rig, Adult Novelties or Toy Shop. The single biggest passive income source in the game.
- Private Island, fully upgraded. Max happy makes every other dollar work harder.
- Rent out the properties you have stopped living in.
- Keep stacking increments on MCS, PTS if ROI stacks up.
$150BN TO $500BN
I'm not there yet, but here are my thoughts: Move the Market
At this size you move prices rather than take them. Income shifts from yield to spread.
- Trade points at volume. Buy the troughs after big dumps, sell into merit and refill demand.
- Stockpile ahead of events: plushies and flowers before Christmas Town and Easter. You can hold inventory nobody else can.
- Arbitrage the item market against bazaars and abroad. WLT is what makes this practical.
- Fund your faction. OCs, territory wars and armour return more, indirectly, than another marginal dividend.
$500BN TO $1TN
Stop earning. Start preserving.
Torn has inflation. Past half a trillion, cash is the worst asset you can hold, and the question changes from how to earn more to how to keep what you have.
- Hold value, not currency: points, Duke items, Christmas Town and Easter collectibles, top-tier armour and weapons. Fixed supply beats a bank balance.
- Keep the full board and the full bank running. Not meaningful income any more, just the floor under everything else.
- Spend on rank, not returns. Stats, merits and faction standing are the only things left that money cannot simply be re-earned into.
KEY
CASH = pays money directly item = pays an item you use or sell perk = pays by saving you money
Block sizes and payouts are fixed by the game. Band boundaries assume typical share prices, and prices move daily, so run the ROI formula against live prices before every purchase.
Bank APRs float and differ by term length, so check the bank screen rather than trusting a remembered number.
And Finally:
Never go to the Casino!
