Howdy folks! I wanted to share info on my journey to place in the top 25 in the Dog Tag competition. I was originally only aiming for 250 dog tags. When I hit that goal, I got hungry for a place in the top 25. In the end, I took 16th place with the 4th most tags stolen.
I took the stealth approach. Before the competition started, I stopped doing anything that could possibly get me noticed. No racing, no playing poker, no doing missions, no busting, etc. I didn't want to become a piñata for other tag hunters. I focused on farming level 10-19 inactive players, and did some limited active-player hunting as hunting for inactives became more of a chore. I targeted them during my natural energy regen, but still started and ended the day panning for inactive tags.
A fun little story:
At about the midpoint of the competition, I attacked one of the players I had researched. I wasn't counting on them using a syringe. I won but was unmasked and immediately bountied. I was in trouble. I needed these bounties claimed, but not by other tag hunters. I didn't have faction members to turn to, so I decided to take a vacation. I boarded a plane to Hawaii, and spent couple days alternating between laying on the beach and laying on an operating table. I returned to Torn after the bounties were claimed, and from that point onward I became anxious at every event notification.
On the 17th, Sugarvalves posted a competition update. I was very happy to learn that I was only a few thousand points behind 10th place. At the end of the article was a request for stories, and I decided I'd write mine up. While I was in the middle of writing up the story I shared in the last paragraph, I was teargassed and stabbed to death. My syringe didn't make a lick of difference, the attack was stealthed and I lost a dog tag. I was already on edge after Hawaii, this cranked that anxiety up to 11.
Thankfully, I made it to the end without being farmed. At the end of the competition, I compiled some statistics that I thought were an interesting insight into my experience:
