Also, if you've finished class E racing, looks for the Class D racing giveaway, coming soon in a separate thread!
To qualify for this contest, you must have a racing license, which you can obtain using your points. Fifty points are required. You can get points by becoming a subscriber, by using one Donator Pack, or by referring a friend to the game using your referral code.
Note that other than getting this license, racing is free. I will be providing the car. You can spend money later on upgrades or private races, but for starting with Class E races, you don't need anything else.
Once you have your racing license, post a screenshot of it showing your player name, like this:
You can block out personal info under your player name, as I did, if you want. You can also email the screenshot to me. The screenshot should show racing license as "Owned". This is proving that you have the license.
If you have a preferred car, post that too, but it must be a Class E car. If you want, I can select a car for you.
If all information is correct (I can check your level and age on your profile) then I will send you a car, and post the send message here so others can see that the process works!
Several temp weapons are described as having a "blinding" effect. Flash grenades and smoke grenades reduce opponent's speed. Pepper spray and tear gas reduce opponent's dexterity (thanks Chigurh for that clarification).
(Note: this guide started as a discussion in GD. I've removed some of the clutter. Please let me know if you want content from the OP, I've saved it offline)
I wanted to see how effective these weapons were, so I ran some trial attacks against a "control" opponent. Below are the results of attacking the same inactive player for seven complete sets of a control (no temp used) and each temporary blinding weapon. That's 35 attacks total (seven sets of no temp weapon, pepper spray, tear gas, flash bomb, smoke bomb). I used a pillow to maximize the number of hits. The results seemed to be stabilizing at that point and energy is valuable so I compiled the results off of that data.
I got a spy on the inactive I'm using for the test. At the start, my speed beat his dexterity by 44%. His speed beat my dexterity by 3%.
Thanks to Chigurh for the great suggestions on what to track and using a pillow! Using the pillow has resulted in more losses and stalemates for me but yields more data points per attack.
I'm referring to OPPONENT vs. YOU. This is because you could attack with the temporary or defend with it by setting your Attack Settings to use your temporary weapon when attacked. Whether attacking or defending, it will be your opponent's speed or dexterity that is affected.
Remember that the performance of the temporary weapon is in relation to your baseline performance for that opponent. Also, results may vary with an opponent who has much better stats than you. For example, he may take you out with one hit before you even deploy the temporary. Perhaps I will do a partial test against a stronger opponent in the future.
In an effort to promote racing, a FREE CLASS-D CAR will be given to players who have completed Class E racing and are now in Class D.
Player must currently be a Class D racer. Giveaway is restricted to one Class-D vehicle per player, vehicle to be selected from the list below.
Players who have achieved Driver's Skill of at least 2.15 will receive $35,000 cash to cover the costs of modifications to the vehicle. Any additional modification costs must be paid for by the player.
Please post here or email to me a picture of your racing banner, showing player name, racing skill and class. Note, you can apply for the free car and the modification money at two separate times, as long as you are class D when you do it.
You can block out personal info under your player name if you want.
If information is correct then I will send you a car and/or money depending on which criteria you meet, and post the send message here so others can see that the process works!
You may select your vehicle from any of the YELLOW rows shown below, or a vehicle can be selected for you. If availability of vehicle is limited, you may receive a different vehicle.
Any suggestions here? Which factions actually have active women players in them? Do the women ever show up in faction chat or are they silent players? And no, I'm not a guy looking to hook up, I'm actually a female player. When I surf the top 30 factions, I don't see many female players.
EDIT: Chart added
Good input so far (up to 4 pages of replies). Here's a chart of the factions that posted positively or neutrally about women in their faction. It's sorted by percent of women. The yellow bars are the best combos of high female counts and high specials, orange are second-best. Note that I had to use declared gender unless I knew otherwise. If anyone would like me to change the count of actual females in their faction, let me know.
As follow-up I may add a poll, haven't decided yet. Check back for more later, I'll update the subject line. Anyone else want to weigh in on factions with cultures inclusive of women players (few that we are) feel free to add on to thread.
It's funny that Duke can speak suggestively to women here, but I bet he won't be rattling off any racial slurs. Along with very old models of cars and in-flight notes that are from ten years ago, Duke's dialog fits in with the anachronistic aspect of the game -- many descriptive details are way behind the times. lol, maybe female players will start making only 65% of the income of male players in income and mugging? perhaps we will be denied promotion beyond level 50? there are so many "1980's and earlier" ways to keep us in our place. just hope we see a woman NPC in the missions eventually, preferably doing something besides owning a brothel. I'm thinking of sending a copy of the "Kill Bill" films to the development team for inspiration.
When you sell a property with modifications back to Torn, does the price reflect the mods you've made? Or is the price the same regardless of mods made?
well, as Ceb pointed out, it's the sheer volume of posts -- and karma -- from the travel threads that makes them stand out.
and there's no indication here that other threads are being permanently excluded, only that the travel threads are being hit now. it's quite possible that other threads will also lose their karma. But quite frankly, if I were going to take action, I'd create a list of all threads and their total karma and sort it with highest total karma first, and then consider if the top ten deserved to be where they are. The travel threads were just the tall shaft of wheat (by far), and so got cut first. As Ceb says, travel thread had waaaay more karma than the next highest threads. Ideally, it wouldn't even be a forum post. There should just be a separate function within Torn for player to report their travel findings, similar to travelrun but internal to Torn.
No matter what Ched does (cuts the karma, doesn't cut the karma, cuts some of the karma, etc) someone is going to complain about it. This issue was voted on by the committee and this is how it is. I don't think there really is anything more to say about it.
ok, let's look at it this way. You are reading a guide, or an answer to a question you posted. The writer has 2000 karma, or 200 karma, or 20 karma. Does that influence your opinion of the information? It does mine -- high karma makes this kind of post more believable.
Then consider the flower thread. Personally, I user travelrun, but I also posted to the travel thread because once travelrun was down for several days and the travel thread was all we had. Does it matter if the person posting has 2000 karma, or 200 karma or 20? Well, high karma here doesn't necessarily mean "good". I usually care whether or not there's a link back to travelrun. If there is, it's probably not a fake post.
I know people who *did* make fake posts to the flower thread to farm karma... and they all had high karma. So I do not trust karma on the travel thread replies anyway. If anything, this change will make the travel thread *better* because there will be no reason for someone to post fake posts just to get karma.
My personal definition of karma is as a measure of valuable information conveyed that is original, thought-provoking and creative. Posting copied gifs is not that. Posting flower run status is valuable but not original, thought-provoking or creative. Some games do require a lot of thought and hard work on the part of the OP (werewolves for example). But most games do not deserve karma either. And bumping recruiting or trading threads do not either.
But that's just me. I'm sure everyone has their own definition of the term. My definition happens to be in alignment with removing the travel karma.
I thought fedded players were not able to logon to their IDs while fedded. However, I just noticed someone who is currently fedded has logged on and is green with last action 0 minutes ago.
If a player is fedded, what are they able to do? I know they have access to read forums and read the wiki because the general public has access. What can they do beyond that?
Simple solution is a) no karma for trading and games, b) small increment of karma for likes in other forums, and c) monthly evaluation by Committee of new threads and well-maintained old threads to give bonus karma of 100-500 points depending on value of that content to the Torn community. That clearly puts threads by Hank and Nash and Tempest and Beerstein and Kath and anyone else who posts and maintains tutorial content OF VALUE ahead of the trolls and spammers. Yes, it also benefits some committee members, staff members and myself. But I was completely happy to have the flower karma stripped away, including all of mine. This isn't self-serving, I think this is what's best for Torn.
Of course, something like this would never go into place, it smacks of a Nanny State, something everyone here strives to avoid. But I think it would drive some people to work harder to produce good content and maintain it. And it would diminish the karma incentive to spam and troll, though of course those posts will go up without incentive.
Well, you know if Wollongong and I agree on anything, it has legs. Personally, karma could disappear from Torn tomorrow and I would not miss it. However, I'm sick of the whining and female-dogging (cert. PG-13) that goes on about how flower runners are farming karma. I wish I could have posted on the flower thread and turned off receiving karma, but I couldn't. I finally stopped posting on the flower thread altogether about a month ago to avoid the continual "noise" of likes filling up the "Feed" box.
I completely support the exclusion of the flower and plushie threads from karma mainly because it clutters up your personal feedback list for "real" posts. Note that I had over 2,000 karma rescinded for flowers, so if you're crying over 100 points just STFU. I think the entire trading forum should be excluded along with fun and games, those forums are not really game-enriching discourse.
Good job, and I'm guessing it was an easy fix that didn't take away from real development time. If it did delay roll-out of territories, then the prioritization was off, this isn't that important.
No spouse, only a 16-year-old gamer son to monitor my behavior. :) even so, he does occasionally object to my gaming time. I have to be honest because, though he doesn't play the game, he can read the forums without an account and he does check up on me occasionally. hey, if you're reading this one, I want the dirty clothes up off the floor and into the hamper by tomorrow night!
My rank went up one level today, presumably on hitting 10K crimes. So my theory on an age barrier seems unfounded. Back to having no idea what the "unknown" element of ranking is. Tomorrow I should hit 250 energy refills, which is an award.
That's the first rank increase for me since the new rules went into effect last August.
10K crimes this morning. so if there's no age hold, I should rank up tomorrow. I also have 10B for 56 days coming on Saturday and 250 energy refills in two days, probably tomorrow unless I miss one.
If there's an age hold around 290 days, then I'd expect a rank up in about 20 days. I have nothing significant coming after this Saturday, so anything later than Sunday or Monday is probably due to meeting requirements for a hold rather than accomplishing a goal.
