The thing about meme culture is, it's completely unpredictable. As shown in a video made by Internet Historian a while back, it's incredibly difficult to force a meme to popularity. Sheer numbers won't cut it. You need to have someone on the inside to market your concept, or a relatively large base of viewers. For example, posting a meme to a subreddit like r/memes may gain it some popularity, but if it doesn't catch on with the suscribers, it won't gain any traction and will die out quickly. The egg is different because it was posted by an unknown account with no starting audience, meaning the only way it could've gained popularity was if the creator had some sort of links or relationships with some fairly large meme pages.
