Lets start with what it is. Depression is a serious but common mood disorder. It comes in multiple forms, but the symptoms are generally the same. Depression causes feelings of sadness, hopelessness and emptiness for most of the day almost every day. It can cause you to lose interest in things you find fun like hobbies, negatively affect sleep and eating, and generally makes day to day life a huge drag. If you have the symptoms most of the day almost every day for a period of two weeks or more, you should see a doctor as you likely have depression.
Causes vary from person to person. A combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors play a role in depression so there is often not one single factor.
How to deal with it. The first step is to find out if you have clinical depression or just feel sad. Online resources are a good place to start but for a real diagnosis you need to see a doctor. Medication is a huge help, but that is for you and your doctor to work out, not me. I am going to focus on things you can do in day to day life to help cope.
Note: This list in not official in anyway. This is advice from my personal experience and you may be different.
1. Don't give up - This is very important, you can deal with depression and it helps if you believe you can.
2. Keep moving - Keep yourself busy with hobbies, work, and exercise. Depression normally makes these tasks more difficult but doing them will improve how you feel overall.
3. Try to be social. Talking to people and being with friends and family is a huge help.
4. Help others - I found that helping other people was my best way to deal with depression. It provided me with a feeling of self worth. This can vary from helping others with depression to volunteering at a soup kitchen to just saying something nice to someone.
5. Set goals - Set goals. You can start with something as simple as getting out of bed, or set one long term. Just see what works for you.
6. Think positive - Look for the good in things, not the bad. Simple but effective.
7. Create - Build something, write a story, make a painting, whatever you like.
8. Stay away from drugs and alcohol. When someone is depressed they are VERY vulnerable to addiction.
9. Don't let anyone force this on you. Everyone is different and moves at their own pace. You will do this when you are ready.
10. If its really bad, consider a hospital. It sounds scary but can be very constructive as it provides a break from mundane everyday life.
This last bit is from me to anyone suffering with depression or a related disorder.
You can beat this, but you can't do it alone. I am here to help if you need it and i'm sure others are too. I don't know you but i do care about you and would like to help you. If you do talk to me I will never tell anyone what you said without your permission. (unless you say you are going to hurt yourself or someone else)
