Dummy’s Guide to Education

Education is a part of Torn where you can unlock certain areas of the game and earn passive gains. You can also gain a small amount of job stats with education.

I always recommend you are doing an education course. They are very cheap and they will take a while to complete, so the sooner you start the better. It will take years to finish all of the education courses.

Completing all of the education courses will cost you 225,785 dollars. This is incredibly cheap considering that it takes years to complete education. If it took you 6.75 years (without any upgrades) to complete all of the education courses you would only have to spend 92 dollars every day.

What is an introduction course?

An introduction course is a course that you must complete before starting all the other courses in that area. Introductions will always take 1 week to complete, and will always cost 200 dollars.

What is a bachelor course?

A bachelor course is the final course in an area. To be able to start this, you need to complete all the other education courses in that one area. A bachelor will always unlock an unique bonus or location. You will have to spend 5,000 dollars to start this, and it will take 5-7 weeks to complete, depending on which course you choose.

How do I reduce education time?
  • Spend merits to decrease education, giving up to a 20% decrease in education time.
  • Join a 1 star Fitness Center or a 7 star Hair Salon, where at that point you can unlock a job special, which will let you use one job point to subtract 30 minutes of time from your current education time. Joining a 10 star company of either type will let you get rid of 5 hours of education time every 24 hours, if you spend all your job points on that.
  • Getting to the rank of "Principal" in the Education starter job, will give you a passive bonus of -10% education time.
  • A Book of Christmas Carols will let you get you past 2 hours of education time, but right now buying this on the item market will cost you 14 million. You can also find this in Christmas Town, but you might as well sell it.
  • Purchasing 1 million shares of West Side South Bank University Block on the Stock Market will reduce your education time by 10%. To unlock the Stock Market you need to spend 20 points.
Biology Courses
  • Takes 31 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 26,150 dollars
  • 50 manual labor
  • 725 intelligence
  • 280 endurance
  • +1% damage bonus for all weapons
  • +20% medical item effectiveness
  • +10% damage bonus on the neck
  • Decrease stealth of opponent
  • +5% chance of achieving a critical hit
  • Withdraw blood and deliver blood
The bachelor course unlocks the Pharmacy, which lets you buy medical items. You can also equip life and stat boosters to your temporary item slot.

Drawing blood is a great way to make passive money because you can sell it on the item market. It takes away some of your life I believe though, so don't do it while chaining or attacking.

Business Management Courses
  • Takes 37 weeks of time without any upgrades
  • 12,800 dollars
  • 75 manual labor
  • 880 intelligence
  • 220 endurance
  • +10% productivity for your company
  • +12% employee effectiveness
  • Increase in advertising effectiveness
  • Increase product prices by 15% without losing customers
  • Passive bonus to employee working stats
The bachelor course unlocks new size, storage size, and staff room upgrades for your company.

The business management courses are made for company directors, so only do these if you are one or going to become one soon. Remember, becoming a company director is a big responsibility!

Combat Training Courses
  • Takes 26 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 29,950 dollars
  • 290 manual labor
  • 845 intelligence
  • No endurance
  • +1% hit rate
  • +5% accuracy for every gun, including heavy artillery
The bachelor course unlocks weapon experience, which lets you become better at certain weapons the more you use them, increasing damage and accuracy.

These are great for people who love to attack, bounty hunt, and chain of course.

Computer Science Courses
  • Takes 31 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 20,150 dollars
  • 25 manual labor
  • 1,460 intelligence
  • 435 endurance
  • Code simple, polymorphic, tunneling, armored, and stealth viruses with a laptop or computer
  • Gain access to hacking crimes
  • +30% decrease in virus coding times
  • +10% increase in hacking crime success rate
The bachelor course lets you send cash and mail anonymously to anyone you want. The computer science courses are mainly for the 18 nerve hacking crime.

This is great for people who want to get the 5,000 hacking crime merit.

General Studies Courses
  • Takes 28 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 19,010 dollars
  • 310 manual labor
  • 760 intelligence
  • 295 endurance
  • Gain access to driving crimes
  • +10% hit increase for temporary items
  • +15% hunting bonus
The bachelor course gives a 10% increase to all work stat gains for all the further education courses. This may seem like you should do this one first, but in the end the working stat increase for the amount of time spent is way too small, so do not worry about it.

These are great for people who want to get the drug crime merits, because otherwise you should not do drug crimes due to the high failure rate.

Health and Fitness Courses
  • Takes 23 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 15,450 dollars
  • 790 manual labor
  • 20 intelligence
  • 340 endurance
  • +2% bonus to dexterity
  • +4% bonus to speed
  • +3% bonus to strength
The bachelor course gives a +25% increase in speed when your opponent tries to escape. This one has probably the most useless bachelor course, so do it for the gym gains then move on to other courses.

This is great for increasing your battle stats.

History Courses
  • Takes 25 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 11,150 dollars
  • 120 manual labor
  • 325 intelligence
  • 320 endurance
  • +10% damage increase with japanese weapons, so kodachi swords and samurai swords I assume
  • +2% melee damage
  • Ability to find medieval coins, Asians sculptures, pages from the Quran, Senet board pieces, and amulets.
The bachelor course unlocks the museum.

If you travel, you need to unlock the museum. You make way much more money by trading in plushies and flowers for points then anywhere else. You can also buy plushies and flowers on the market, and then trade them in at the museum and you will still make a profit.

What is the museum?

The museum is a location in the city where you can exchange certain artifacts and collectibles for points. A set is made up of one of each item (sometimes multiple of a certain item is needed) in that set.

Plushie Set = 10 points = at least 500,000

Exotic Flower Set = 10 points = at least 500,000

Medieval Coin Set = 100 points = at least 5,000,000

Vairocana Buddha = 100 points = at least 5,000,000

Ganesha Sculpture = 250 points = at least 12,500,000

Shabti Sculpture = 500 points = at least 25,000,000

Quran Scripts = 1,000 points = at least 50,000,000

Senet Game Set = 2,000 points = at least 100,000,000

Egyptian Amulet = 10,000 points = at least 500,000,000

Law Courses
  • Takes 40 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 28,745 dollars
  • No manual labor
  • 1,120 intelligence
  • 220 endurance
  • Reduce chance of getting caught while trying to bust someone
  • Buy yourself and others out of jail while you are also jailed
  • +5% discount when buying properties from Estate Agents
  • +15% skill in busting
  • +15% discount when bailing people out of jail
  • Use less nerve when trying to escape from jail
  • Gain increase in advertising effectiveness for your company
The bachelor course makes busting 50% easier and bailing 50% cheaper.

Overall the law courses are pretty useless, because when in jail you will typically be broken out by someone extremely soon. You will only want to do part of this if you own a company or want to soon. However, this will help with the busting merits that are required.

Mathematics Courses
  • Takes 35 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 14,070 dollars
  • 20 manual labor
  • 990 intelligence
  • 435 endurance
  • +2% bonus to speed
  • +3% bonus to defense
  • +1% productivity for your company
  • +5% bonus to ammo management
The bachelor course will give you a +30% bonus to ammo management.

These are great for people who want high battle stats, and like to use guns as their main weapons to save a bit on ammo.

Psychology Courses
  • Takes 24 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 12,180 dollars
  • 65 manual labor
  • 688 intelligence
  • 25 endurance
  • +15% bonus to dexterity
  • +10% increase to awareness (chance of finding items in city)
The bachelor course will give you a +10% crime success rate.

These are great for people who like to do crimes.

Self Defense Courses
  • Takes 22 weeks to complete without any upgrades
  • 17,500 dollars
  • 885 manual labor
  • 60 intelligence
  • 485 endurance
  • +6% bonus to defence
  • +5% bonus to speed
  • Unlock kick attack
The bachelor course gives you a +100% increase in fist damage in a fight.

Self Defense is great for people for people who like to roleplay as ninjas, but otherwise they are good for battle stats.

Sports Science Courses
  • 29 weeks
  • 18,630 dollars
  • 470 manual labor
  • 185 intelligence
  • 300 endurance
  • +1% bonus to strength gains
  • +1% bonus to speed gains
  • +1% bonus to defense gains
  • +1% bonus to dexterity gains
  • +10% increase in effectiveness of temporary weapons
  • +2% bonus to speed, strength, defense, and dexterity
  • Unlock the sports shop
The bachelor course gives you a +1% increase to all further gym gains.

This is the first education courses I recommend you complete, because the sooner you do them the more you will benefit in the long run.

Honor Bars

You get a honor bar for every bachelor course you finish. Apparently there are 3 others, but I could find out what they were. I will look more into it later.

Conclusion

There are a bunch of paths that you can choose to go down, and I will not tell you which one to go down. You can look at this and choose for yourself. I hope this guide made your life easier.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, please comment below and I will respond in <1 day.

Edit
8/21/2019 - About a year or so back, I quit Torn. So, if there are any changes made to education in the future then this guide will no longer be accurate. As I write this, I believe the guide is still 100% accurate. It's great to see many new players have found this guide at least semi-useful. Good luck!

Make the Donator Notebook Better · · 46 likes

I use the donator notebook on a daily basis. I use it mainly for education and plushie/flower running. At the moment though there are many limitations.

First, right now there are only two sizes for the notebook. "Fullscreen mode," which takes up close to half the browser and the size of all your different chats. In the settings menu at the bottom right of your screen, the size option changes both your chats (Faction, Company, Global, etc.) and your notebook, without any option to make them separate sizes. Now, I don't think this is a change that should be top priority, but it should be a simple fix that is a quality of life improvement.

At the moment in the notebook, your editing options to change your notes are very basic. All you can do is type what is on your keyboard. First, links in your notebook come up as normal text, not links. If you wanted to see that picture you would need to copy and paste it into google, which should be an unnecessary step. Make it so the links are "clickable."

Also, as I am typing this forum post I have many options. I can highlight letters, change the color of letters, use emojis [] , indent, change the size of my indent, insert a link or image, make a bullet or numbered list automatically, change how the words align, make letters bold, make letters italic, and I have a back button too. I can also insert a table, underline, use special characters, and even print.

How many of those can I do on the notebook? Absolutely none! That is an outrage, and we should add all of those options to the notebook. If you are worried about clutter, there is a A at the top right that when clicked will bring down all the options, like a dropdown menu.

If you want to add anything, if you agree with my idea, or if you disagree with my idea, please comment below.

Today marks Chedburn's the 5000th day of his account! This means that Chedburn's account has existed for 13.7 years.

Thank you for creating such a great game that is free to everyone.

What should we do to celebrate and honor him?

What is the museum?

The museum is a location in Torn City where you can trade in certain items to earn points.

How do I unlock the museum?

To unlock the museum you need to complete every education course in History. Without any education upgrades this will take 25 weeks to complete, which is almost half of a whole year!

1 year = 52 weeks

What is a flower or plushie set?

One flower set or plushie set is worth ten points in the museum.

1 Flower Set = 10 points
  • 1 Dahlia (Found in Mexico)
  • 1 Crocus (Found in Canada)
  • 1 Banana Orchid (Found in Cayman Islands)
  • 1 Orchid (Found in Hawaii)
  • 1 Edelweiss (Found in Switzerland)
  • 1 Ceibo Flower (Found in Argentina)
  • 1 Heather (Found in United Kingdom)
  • 1 Cherry Blossom (Found in Japan)
  • 1 African Violet (Found in South Africa)
  • 1 Peony (Found in China)
  • 1 Tribulus Omanense (Found in UAE)
1 Plushie Set = 10 points
  • 1 Sheep (Buy at Bits 'n Bob's)
  • 1 Kitten (Buy at Bits 'n Bob's)
  • 1 Teddy Bear (Buy at Bits 'n Bob's)
  • 1 Wolverine (Found in Canada)
  • 1 Stingray (Found in Cayman Islands)
  • 1 Jaguar (Found in Mexico)
  • 1 Nessie (Found in United Kingdom)
  • 1 Red Fox (Found in United Kingdom)
  • 1 Monkey (Found in Argentina)
  • 1 Chamois (Found in Switzerland)
  • 1 Lion (Found in South Africa)
  • 1 Panda (Found in China)
  • 1 Camel (Found in UAE)
What are you offering?

I want you to send me the items for a set in a trade. As of right now I will only be accepting trades with plushie or flower sets. You must trade with me, not just send them. That way it makes it easier for me to make sure you have every item, or you didn't give too much. I will only be accepting trades that have at least 100 sets.

I will convert them into points through the museum. For every point that I got from converting your items, I will keep 1,000 Torn dollars off of it.

For example, if you gave me 250 of each plushie that is worth 2,500 points, which right now is worth around 134,500,000 dollars. I will only take 2,500,000. That is only 1.9%!

Why don't I just sell my items straight to the item market then?

Well you will still make more money off of giving your plushies and flowers to me and me converting them, even though I take that 1.9%.

When will I get back my money?

As soon as I accept the trade, you will get your money back within 24 hours. Most likely, you will get your money back much sooner though, but for larger trades it may take longer. The reason you can get more money by converting points into the museum is because it has limited access, so not everyone can convert points. If everyone could convert points I would not be making this thread right now, and you would not make any profit or make more money than selling on the item market by converting plushies or flowers into points.

What will I sell the points for?

As I write this one point is worth ~53,200

As of right now you will get 52,200 for each point.

Yeah I do understand the game has changed a lot, but I do not think any of the updates were bad that I can think of.

For example, Bookies 2.0 was really necessary and the Gym rebuild adds a lot of polish.

I'm looking for cash flow ·

No offense, but keep in mind people do not usually pay a level 4 to join their faction.

Sharkeyfive - a jerk? ·

I would say 84/100.

What would you call an unnecessary update?

Edit: Title was changed btw

Those are very interesting results.

Try to go to unrelated next time, and title it grave so staff know to grave it.

Poker Players! minimize mugging impact post-game ·

1. Next time try not to make a tutorial and guide on a single, specific thing. You could have messaged the dude who made that thread and asked him to add it. Furthermore your method will be obsolete within a few months , or less than that. That thread isn't even that general, he is talking about mug protection.

2. He was just listing this as a method, there are many other ways to protect your money, like self hosping.

Also when I thanked you for your effort in making this, despite it not being that useful, you just disliked my comment???

Didn't they just put down a 1 million dollar bet maximum, and you can't withdraw your bet?

If they hadn't this would have been a well done guide, so thanks for putting some effort it, but make sure that people realize that Bookies 2.0 will make this redundant.

Worst patch change in recent memory ·

"Now don't get me wrong, this is a great change for the 4 people who actually read the newspaper,  but for normally functioning people this is actually the worst thing to happen since making scamming legal (xanax / vicodin swappers). "

Lol. Why is scamming such a big deal? I think it makes the game a lot better, and I do not even participate in it. Besides what is so bad about Xanax / Vicodin swappers? It is your own fault for not reading the text / not paying attention. It is your own fault for falling for a scam.

This game is not designed to cater to your needs and make everything perfect, like no buy mugging or scamming.

Also back on topic, it only takes a click of a button to get rid of the green highlight on the newspaper, just ignore it if you do not like it.

Drawing blood ·

You can only draw your own blood using a empty blood bag (by "using" it). Whichever blood type fills that empty bag is your blood type.

To use a blood bag and not get hosped for the wrong one, find a blood type which is compatible with you. For example, if your blood type is O- then everyone can use your blood, but you can only get blood from O-.

Using an empty blood bag will give you a 3 hour medical cooldown, meaning you can only draw 8 times a day. Drawing blood takes away 20% of your life, so make sure to take 4 at most, and then wait for your life to regen (every 5 minutes) and you can take the fifth one.

You can get a merit for using a blood bag which is incompatible with your type. If your blood type is AB+ this merit is impossible to get, as you can use any type of blood bag.

To draw your blood you need to finish one of the courses in Biology, I forget the name but you can look at the bonuses to find the right course.

250 inactivity refills · · 4 likes

Well if you do not have donator status, 250 refills = 25,000 energy.

But if you buy donator status, even just for a month it becomes 37,500 energy.Personally, I would train with that energy, but if you are short for cash you can get a lot, or even split it evenly, so half trains and half attacking and losing or reviving.

If you want to make money, I would say your best bet is to get donator status for 5 dollars, or get a donator pack for 25 million, then get the medical job until you are a brain surgeon, and then I would join a revive faction. If you join a revive faction you can revive for 25 energy, not 75. That way you can make 3 times as much money with reviving.

If you are looking to go inactive, I would try and join the army, you can get some high defense gains if you go inactive there long enough, do not worry if you can't rank up, you can always rank up when you go back and get any specials, but you will get more job the points the higher your position in the job.

Also if you want to only get on 4 times a year, you can get invest money in the bank every 3 months, so sell all your items and invest in the bank.

If you keep on looking I bet you can get someone to marry you.

The right column is with donator status (I messed up the table).
  No Donator Status

Hmm... you can't even get the time before a chain resets between attacks over 5 minutes. Mine seems to be out of sync by only a couple seconds. I know this sounds silly but have you tried refreshing?

Pay Up DUDE! ·

I hate to say this, but I actually agree with DUDE. Stop lying for attention on a videogame.

You attacked him and lost, ~20 minutes after you made the bet, so this was the official bet.

Much later DUDE attacked you and lost, completely different fight.
